22 oz. bomber poured into tulip
(11/18/13 enjoy by date)
L: pale orange, almost peach, no amber; thick 3/4- to 1-inch head of white foam off a big percolation -- it's a show, this pour, for it seems to have an afterburner burst of percolation that kicks in about halfway into the first big burst. not 100% clear but not opaque, either ... relatively clear for a DIPA; some good stick off head, a little bit of lacing on the way down
S: grassy to begin with ... quickly turns into the standard caramel/tropical fruit of a typical DIPA
T: hint of peach, huge bitter bite, slight bit of spice/black pepper -- there is definitely a little something different about this one, but like the smell, it turns into another caramel/sweet/tropical fruit DIPA with huge bitter hops up front
F: solid ... watery enough to drink easy but full of carbonation, so it never truly feels watery
O: 5 for the effort ... but frankly, the idea of mixing any other style with the American hop salad is misled -- it always turns out to be just another American hop salad. and the idea that there is something truly German about this brew misses the mark by a lot. all I taste is massive bitter hops. i don't taste malt, the spicy hops notes disappear within seconds ... ultimately, I feel like I'm drinking one of 10 different American imperial IPAs I've already had.
it's a great brew. I love it and might give it a couple more tries. but the only thing I detect that's German about it is the name.
so 5 for effort, 1.5 for delivering on the label's promise
