22 oz. bottle, with bottled on date 07/26/2013 printed on the side of the bottle. Very cool looking cadmium painted bottle with a nice long blurb on the back. Expectations are decent based on Stone's reputation, and based on how well I like the Stone 16th Anniversary IPA. From Wikipedia: "The term Götterdämmerung is occasionally used in English to refer to a disastrous conclusion of events."
Poured into a clear balloon snifter glass.
A - Pours a brassy orange colored body with decent clarity, some bubbles, and three fingers of doughy soapy off-white head. Head retention is excellent for a 9.50% abv beer.
S - Smells of fruity, floral, and herbal hops. Pine and some soapiness. It definitely smells like a Stone beer. Some skunky cat piss acidity is noticeable as it warms.
T - Taste is strange, but has a lot going on. I was initially off-put by a weird licorice spice type taste, but it's beginning to grow on me as I sip it. Crisp pilsner malts are definitely apparent here. Floral hops, ripe pears, bread, some peppery spice, and some sugary fruit roll-up on the finish. Maybe just the vaguest hint of alcohol heat at first, but it fades quickly.
M - Feel ends sticky, oily, bitter, and resinous. A fitting end.
Overall, this is some seriously good stuff. Complex as all hell, the bottle says it right, this beer pushes the IPA into new territory. This thing seriously has a lot going on, and hopefully I will be able to land a few more bottles of this. Definitely recommended if it is available to you.
