This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

Inspired by new experimental German hops, our brewing team is celebrating our 17th Jahrestag by taking palates on an unconventional tour of Deutschland by way of Southern California. In doing so, we used a grain bill comprised exclusively of pilsner malts and German hops with crazy awesome names: Herkules, Hersbrucker, Magnum, Merkur, Opal, Smaragd & Strisselspalt. Dry-hopping with Sterling, a U.S. hop with Saaz parentage, lends a bit of familiarity, but be forewarned, this is a unique beer that takes the IPA–a style we've already pushed far beyond it's previous limits over the years–to interesting new territory.

A: poured into a 20oz imperial pint glass. If the beer was filtered it is bow suffering from chill haze (I assume stone filters all their IPAs). I was expecting a brilliant crystal clear gold color after learning that the brew is nearly all pilsner malt. Head was white and was gone fairly quickly.

S: aroma is slightly funky and off putting. I get subtle honey aroma but mostly earthy muddled vegetative aroma.

T: bitter to the point where it is unenjoyable. The hop flavor is completely out of balance in my opinion. The bitterness from the German varietals is unclean and dominant. Overly-earthy.

M: well carbonated and fulfilling.

O: overall I was pretty disappointed in this offering from Stone. I loved the concept of taking German super hops and making an IPA with Pilsner malt. I am afraid stone missed the mark for me on this one. Love their other IPAs though. I really felt like this beer needed better clarity, as well as a much cleaner hop profile. Bitterness was over the top in all the wrong ways.

Picked up a bomber from Total Wine in mid-August for $5.99. Bottled on 7-26-13.

Beer poured golden orange with a decent white head that dissipated quickly.

Nose is lemony and biscuity.

Initial taste was very lemon forward with a resiny finish. Malts lend a pils slant, somewhat biscuity but in the end the strength of the alpha hops shines thru.

Mouthfeel is moderately carbonated, full bodied, and fairly smooth.

Overall this is a pretty good brew, not nearly as lemony as the 16th anniversary version. Give it a try if you can still find it.

Gotterdammerung IPA is a nice golden/orange/peach color. The body is clear and it pours a small head with okay retention and moderate/heavy lacing. Smells mostly of sweet floral hops, along with pine and citrus. Just a hint of herbalness in the aroma.

Taste starts with floral hops, then mango followed by grapefruit and a bit a tangerine. Finishes with the pine expected from a Stone IPA along with some herbalness that is definitely different. Aftertaste is sweet floral, hop oil, pine and grapefruit. Has an average body with above average carbonation and a bit of a slick, oily feel.
