Formerly Stochasticity Project: Grapefruit Slam IPA

First Release: February 2014
India pale ales harness the inherent flavor characteristics of hops to bring forward familiar flavors of pine, resin, spice, and citrus. In some cases, those botanicals are so potent, they exactly mirror specific edibles. Such is the case with Centennial hops, which hail from the Great Northwest and come across on the palate like a mouthful of citrus fruit. That sensation is amplified with this, the first beer introduced via the Stochasticity Project–a double IPA brewed with Centennial, Chinook and Magnum hops as well as an immense dosing of fresh grapefruit peel. The result is over-the-top bittersweet grapefruit intensity that is at once refreshing and bracing in its citrusy bitterness.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass. pours deep orange red with a small white head. Smells of citrus, nice and inviting. Tastes of bright citrus, and smooth four a double. Beer is light bodied and easy drinking, good carbonation. Overall, a very good beer.

#1 from the 12 days of IPA's pack. Decent citrus-hoppy DIPA..not overly dank or drying, but I'm missing the "slam" of grapefruit.

Part of the 12 days of IPA mix pack. 8% ABV, hopped with Centennia, Chinook & Magnum. No IBU per the label or website.
Pours out to a hazy burnt orange, forming a small white head with a brisk pour which quickly recedes. Quite low carbonation. ~1.75-2 carbs or so. Lots of flittering gunk on closer inspection. The nose is definitely centennial, mango pineapple, juicy tropical fruit. The taste is quite nice. There is an upfront maltiness which is chewy and has some lingering sweet which hangs out until the bitterness kicks in a bit later. Some grain husk makes its appearance followed by some tannic astringency and pepper wave in the aftertaste, then finishing dry. The bitterness seems nicely balanced....at first. Quite bitter in the finish. No off flavors or aromas. I can't say that the grapefruit adds anything that the hops already don't.

They got it right when they say "The result is over-the-top bittersweet grapefruit intensity that is at once refreshing and bracing in its citrusy bitterness." I can't say that I would buy it again though.

bought as a 12 oz bottle off a room temp shelf about 2 months after bottling then consumed about a month later from a tall tulip glass. Nice deep amber color with 2 finger really dense, creamy, white head that lasts a a long time and leaves some lacing, although not an impressive amount. Smells like what is advertised; grapefruit rind plus nice complex malts and some hoppiness, although I can't pick out other details (identifying subtle smells is not my strength). Same taste as smell. Very nice, rich body with mild to moderate carbonation. I really like this balance between the less-than-overpowering grapefruit and the hoppy/ malty foundation. I also like the fact that this one delivers as advertised on the bottle; none of the common "flavors of X, y, and z" where I only get flavor A and perhaps a bit of x.

Murky orange to copper with one finger off white head. Nose is full of candied grapefruit and slight hint of pine. Opens with a sappy citrus pine that fades to hop resin. Body is light to medium with medium carbonation. Ends with a bitter resin. Overall a good IPA, but one note and missing complexity.

Amber with a 1/4" white head, which fades to a wisp. Moderate lacing.

Aroma is strong grapefruit, caramel, slight grass.

Taste is grapefruit zest, a touch of caramel.

Medium body, moderate carbonation. Dry, bitter finish.

Very good. If you like grapefruit, you'll like this.

Grapefruit smell , just a hint of sweetness before the bitterness and citrus zest take over.

Stone does a great job and this one is well balanced. It definitely gets bitterness from the rind. I think the bitterness over shadows any grapefruit flavor, so if you are expecting the flavor from the name, you will be disappointed.

Pours a cloudy amber. Medium foam. Big grapefruit aroma. Big flavors. Bitter grapefruit up front. Hop resin body. Mellow bitterness in the end. Thick mouth feel. Heavy. Another winner from Stone.
