BEER INFO

Brewed by:
Stone Brewing Co.

Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.20%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
First Release: February 2014
India pale ales harness the inherent flavor characteristics of hops to bring forward familiar flavors of pine, resin, spice, and citrus. In some cases, those botanicals are so potent, they exactly mirror specific edibles. Such is the case with Centennial hops, which hail from the Great Northwest and come across on the palate like a mouthful of citrus fruit. That sensation is amplified with this, the first beer introduced via the Stochasticity Project–a double IPA brewed with Centennial, Chinook and Magnum hops as well as an immense dosing of fresh grapefruit peel. The result is over-the-top bittersweet grapefruit intensity that is at once refreshing and bracing in its citrusy bitterness.

Thanks Kathy for sharing the bottle. Thought I might have tried this but I got this confused with Port Grapefruit Puncher, kind of similar names, eh?

A- Poured to a tumbler with a clear deep golden body. Head forms to about a finger with decent retention and falls to a silky ring. Sheets of lace follow this ring at the top and beyond that is spotty.

S- Not deep and pungent hop notes, at least compared to many other modern IIPAs and even other Stone ones. The citrus focus is super strong though, it may not be deep and complex hoppy but tons of citrus oil jumps off the top. Tiny bit of malts and yeast beyond that. A bit thin in a way.

T- Whatever was missing in the aroma is made up for here. I have never quite tasted a beer that really focused on grapefruit this much. It is both a strength and weakness but the aftertaste is absolutely pure grapefruit peel, flesh and all, it lingers. Beyond the citrus is just some floral hop hints and slight cracked malts.

MF- Moderate to even light bodied for a Double IPA with a silky, fairly creamy overall texture. Carbonation at a nice high crispy level and it accentuates those citrus oils and the creaminess of the body. Finishes with a moderate bitterness on the palate.

Intense grapefruit dominates the taste buds but it is kind of a one trick pony. The hops are not as deep and complex as Ruination or Enjoy By. At the same time, the beer is named Grapefruit Slam and they did what they set out to do, higher ABV grapefruit nectar basically.

22 oz bottle. Pours clear golden orange with a medium creamy white head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is sugary bready malts and tropical fruit / grapefruit.

The flavor is a little sweet fruity bready malt followed by a pretty big resiny bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with light carbonation.

Overall, a nice IPA, but not as good as I thought it sounded.

Bottle share at Proof done side-by-side with Proof's Guru IPA blended with Apollo aged on grapefruit. Pale straw in color with very little head. Big grapefruit and orange citrus with some tropical fruit in the aroma. Taste is spicy/citrus combo with a fair malt backbone. High carbonation (despite little head) and medium body. I enjoyed the Proof considerably more.

22oz brown bomber with a freshness date.

Stunningly tight and sticky lacing on top of this hazed out pale amber brew. Big bag of smashed grapefruits rush the nostrils, hints of alcohol and hops within. My palate is simply being abused by the onslaught of grapefruit and hops, the alcohol is clean and quite warming. Some light bready tones underneath but the finish is just more lingering grapefruit and hops.

Slam? This is a Smackdown, thanks Stone for this one and keeping things fun.
