22oz bottle (bottled on 1/23/14) poured into a Bruery tulip.

A - Pours with outstanding clarity and a pale copper color. A thick finger plus of frothy off-white head lingers for a couple of minutes and leaves thick webs of lacing on the glass.

S - Plenty of citrus here. Grapefruit pulp and very noticeable grapefruit peel (not surprising) - fresh, green, just off the tree kind of aroma. Some sugary sweetness gives this a bit of a candy impression on the nose. Hops totally dominate the aroma...pretty much nothing else gets thru.

T - Bitter grapefruit peel...again huge citrus overall. Starts with a bit of sweetness against the grapefruit and moves to straight peel - dry and bitter...a distinct bitterness that diverges from a hoppy bitterness - definitely grapefruit peel derived. Not offensive, but not the most pleasant bitterness I've experienced in a beer. Very dry, a bit medicinal, a bit odd, and definitely overpowering. Unfortunately it covers up much of the fruity citrus that I was hoping this would deliver.

M - Pure Stone in mouthfeel...like most/all of their IPA's - dry, bitter, resiny and sticky, Stone house yeast-yness, with plenty of body that results in a medium-full feel overall but still manages to stay behind the hops. Medium carbonation, finely bubbled, softly tingling the tongue.

O - Oddly medicinal bitterness, that alternately is a bit offensive and medicinal and other times juicy, fruity and citrusy in a great way. Kinda a love-hate beer for me and a bit schizophrenic in character. Plenty of Stone goodness in here, but the grapefruit peel gives too much of what I would call an "off-bitterness" that isn't pleasant to my taste buds. Much of the citrus juicy aspects are covered up by the medicinal side. Good...sure, great - not to me. Glad to try, but far from my favorite IPA/DIPA...not even close to my favorite Stone IPA/DIPA.

22 oz bottle. Pours clear golden orange with a medium creamy white head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is sugary bready malts and tropical fruit / grapefruit.

The flavor is a little sweet fruity bready malt followed by a pretty big resiny bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with light carbonation.

Overall, a nice IPA, but not as good as I thought it sounded.

Bottle share at Proof done side-by-side with Proof's Guru IPA blended with Apollo aged on grapefruit. Pale straw in color with very little head. Big grapefruit and orange citrus with some tropical fruit in the aroma. Taste is spicy/citrus combo with a fair malt backbone. High carbonation (despite little head) and medium body. I enjoyed the Proof considerably more.

22oz brown bomber with a freshness date.

Stunningly tight and sticky lacing on top of this hazed out pale amber brew. Big bag of smashed grapefruits rush the nostrils, hints of alcohol and hops within. My palate is simply being abused by the onslaught of grapefruit and hops, the alcohol is clean and quite warming. Some light bready tones underneath but the finish is just more lingering grapefruit and hops.

Slam? This is a Smackdown, thanks Stone for this one and keeping things fun.
