Upscale beer at its finest.
I did a three day brewery, brewpub, beer bar tour of San Diego and made two stops at Stone - one on Saturday night for a night cap and one on Sunday AM for the brewery tour.
This was my 195th brewery/brewpub visit and I will say Stone is the most spectacular, high-quality, well-run, and busiest stop I've made. It's great beer for the masses and I really enjoyed it although I can't say it's my favorite (prefer Russian River and Pizza Port Carlsbad for a more grounded experience).
I sat at the inside bar on both visits. Saturday night was a mad house and I felt lucky to get a seat at the bar. The bar on Saturday night was mixed company while the bar on Sunday around 11:30 AM waiting for the noon tour was mostly beer aficionados and some who just liked to drink lots of beer...on Sunday morning before a brewery tour.
All food is local and artisanal and they go as far as to not serve Sprite but rather a similar type soda with real sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup. I could see how someone with basic tastes and a limited budget may not think highly of a place like this. The only food I had was the sausage sampler and it was very good.
The only crisiticism I have is the well-structured tour had a guide who was a bit long winded and 40 minutes turned into an hour with a bit too much of a rambling history of beer. I'm of the school that if you've seen one brewery tour, you've seen them all. I still felt the Stone brewery tour was worth it - get there early to reserve your spot (up to 2 hours in advance I think). You can see most of the brewery from the inside bar which it is adjacent to.
The gift shop/tap room is entirely too small and by 1:40 on Sunday as our tour was sampling and another was tee'ing up, there was no room to move. I still found a way to drop $80 on a cycling jersey and a couple of tasting glasses. Plenty of very nice merchandise.
Overall it's a world-class beer destination that you owe it to yourself to visit.
