Pours a very dark golden amber orange with a nice fluffy two finger head and creates quite a pretty display of fluffy white lacing.

Smells very exotic and tropical with a very sharp, bitter finish.

The flavor drops off quite a bit in rating as it's a rather bitter and bland brew. Spicy citrus and a slight fruit loop-ness after taste.

Too dry for my taste. Not sticky enough.

Overall, This looks beautiful and smells wonderful, but drops off in points once in the mouth (IMO).

12 oz poured into a goblet

Appearance: A bit more ruddy than Crooked Tree. Very little head to speak of. White but dissipates quickly. CT does as well, so true to recipe, probably. First pour was clear, second pour hazy- typical of DH unfiltered beers. Not going to turn this one down based on looks.

Smell: Malty. Marzen-like. Candied almonds, nearly-burnt bread. Slightly darker and sweeter than Crooked Tree. Just enough spice to be intriguing.

Taste: Very mellow bitterness, not unlike a good ESB. No fruitiness, just pure bitterness. You can tell that this is primarily a bittering hop. This is a very strong base hop- as I get further in the glass I realize that this is why the aroma was so muted on this beer. If hops were artillery, this would be a howitzer. I'm not getting any off flavors, just a ton of pecan pie crust (minus the sweetness).

Mouthfeel: Not a light drinker. This one will hit you towards the back of the tongue and the roof of your mouth. Just carbonated enough to stay lively. Drinks like a thick maibock.

Overall: Well-made single hop IPAs (especially made with super alpha bittering hops) are hard to come by. This isn't going to "impress" West Coast hop heads, but it will teach you what Apollo hops can do. Well worth the experience.

Very nice IPA, brought a growler home of this last time I was at Dark Horse. Sadly it was gone that night..found myself wanting more!
