Dark amber pour with a pretty good white head on top of it. The nose is a nice pairing of smooth caramel malts and heavy resiny hops.
The taste on this starts out with big citrus and grapefruit, but then seems to come back into balance and has a strong malt undertone present. Not nearly as abrasive as many in its style, and dangerously smooth drinking for its ABV...I didn't really notice the alcohol while I was drinking it.
The mouthfeel on this is moderate but not remarkable, thick, but not oily. The drinkability, also moderate but not huge. I think this brings some good flavours to the table, but it doesn't really stand out in any particular category either.
The bottom line: Dark Horse has put together a very serviceable DIPA with Double Crooked. The alcohol is absolutely hidden as far as i'm concerned, and I was shocked to find out that this is a 13% beer. The flavour profile is not as big as the alcohol might make you think though, and this is not a particularly amazing beer for its style, merely good.
