1-year-old bottle poured into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint glass. This is last year's brew, and the ABV is listed at 13.6%, not 12%. The label also bears the claim, "AGES WELL".
A: Slightly cloudy, with tiny bubbles. Apricot in color. About an inch of dense head, which dissipates fairly quickly. As with other Dark Horse beers I have tried, there is a good deal of sediment left in the bottle. The lacing is not overly persistent.
S: Like a yeasty butterscotch. Smells like this is going to be a sweet one. No sign of that high alcohol on the nose. Some hops, but none of the pine I anticipate in a DIPA.
T: Here come those hops. This is nowhere near as sweet as it smells. Very smooth, masking the alcohol quite well. There's something bready, like a rich, Eastern European bread, but with a lingering bitterness on the finish.
M: Just what I want from a DIPA, with none of the stickiness that some manage. In the mouth, it releases a lot of those tiny bubbles that a good champaign does. This is the biggest surprise so far. I only wish this effect lasted to the end of the glass.
D: Not a session beer. The alcohol hits like a hammer long before I can summarize. I thought STM&D all diminished with the carbonation, lowering my rating on each.
I am not sure this aged as well as I had hoped. It is smooth, to be sure, but it seems to have lost too much complexity.

Appearance is a amber red color with a one finger white head that faded fast.
Aroma is bready, malty, sweet honey. Faint pine.
Taste is sticky sweet, malty and bready flavors that are well balanced.
Mouthfeel is medium to full with a perfect bitterness.
This is a great example of a high high abv ipa.
Reminds me a lot of gorillanaught. I'm impressed.
Would love to drink this again!
