Poured into a snifter. Thanks to each of the 3 BAs who included this as an extra. You know who you are.
3.5 A: Hazy amber brown color. Half a finger (if even that) of short lived creamy head. Some irregular lacing. I'll give this one a break due to the high ABV.
4.5 S: This ain't no DIPA. Rather American B-wine all the way. Citrusy and piney hops with the focus on orange and mango. Super strong malt backbone with lots of toffee sweetness from the residual sugar and perhaps a touch of crystal malt.
4.5 T: One of the best balanced barleywines I've ever had. Slightly bready are the malts. Toffee and caramel show up again. Hop bitterness balances perfectly - not too sweet not too bitter. Hop flavor is there with pine and orange again, but seem trivial in comparison to the malts. Alcohol is warming, but extremely well hidden.
4.5 M: Lighter heavy body. Good carbonation. Very creamy with subtly warm finish. Very nice.
5.0 D: This is easily the best drinking American barleywine I've had due to the incredible balance of bitterness and malt sweetness. Alcohol very well hidden. Great beer.
