Had on-tap at the Detroit Pub in Detroit, Michigan. This beer was described as "Dark Horse Double Barrel", and I *have* to assume that this is the same beer. The bartender argued that the beer was 9%... this says 12%. I saw it come out of a Dark Horse tap, and I know for a fact that this wasn't crooked tree, so safe bet that this is the beer.

Appearance: A brown/orange color with a creamy little head floating on top... beautiful looking beer that also yields phenomenal lacing all the way down the glass. A stunner!

Smell: Barrel definitely did some work on this one with that mellow oaky/vanilla sort of characteristic. There's also a pretty bold malt flavor that you'd expect (if not from the color alone) from the style. Of course, there's a nice wallop of hops as well.

Taste/feel: 12%? Really? The waitress was confident it was 9%, even though I told her it wasn't (assuming this was the beer). I got virtually no trace of the alcohol in the taste, none in the feel, and none in the aroma... truly a dangerous beer. The taste is almost exactly like the smell, with a great balance. When this starts to get a bit too sweet, some hops come in right on the finish to wipe that away. This is a mellow, nice bodied, gorgeous looking, lovely smelling, easy-drinking beer. I wish I could have enjoyed it longer, but I drank it down pretty quickly. Get your hands on this stuff.

Poured from the bottle into a snifter. About 1.5 years of age on this bad-boy.

Poured a burnt orange color with a 1 finger off-white head. Very syrupy in appearance.

Smell was a mix of citrus fruits and malty sweetness with a powerful but pleasant alcohol smell.

Taste was solid. I consider this to be a milder version of DFH120. Definitely strong alcohol but the sweetness of the malts balances it out nice.

Mouth feel was thick and syrupy, almost like a cognac.

Overall, pretty decent. Definitely a sipper but quite a bit more balanced than I anticipated.

Poured from 12 oz bottle, no date, into snifter, with a small head that dissappated quickly. Appearance is a murky brownish/orange, not exactly appetizing.

Aroma is strong hop flavor, some citrus but mostly pine, caramelt malts

Flavor - Really bitter hop bomb but it has a strong malt profile to help balance it out, but the bitter finish definitely lingers

Mouthfeel - its got a medium carbonation and body is on the medium/heavy side. Somewhat of an oily feel and dryness

Overall - Awesome beer, quite hoppy but still balanced, would not put this at 12%. This somewhat reminds me of a hoppy barleywine, like something FFF would do. Maybe that has something to do with the age on it? Believe this was bottled in the spring so its probably about 6 months old. Would like to get some fresh next year. Just received this bottle from a friend this past weekend.
