poured from a 12 oz brown bottle – not dated
Dark Horse Toonilla is black in color with a slight red cast when held up to the light. The chocolate 1-finger head reduced to a collar of foam and some spotty lacing. The smell was dominated by black coffee and some chocolate sweetness. The nose also picked up some smoke. The taste matches the smell with the flavor of burnt toast, light vanilla and light hops towards the finish. Mouth feel is medium to high-medium bodied, smooth and a little sticky.
Overall, a balanced and drinkable English Sweet/Milk Stout.

Pours black with half a finger of dark caramel-colored foam that borders on used motor oil darkness. Head retention is okay. Aroma is rich with chocolate, toffee, vanilla bean and roasty and toasty malts. It smells dark, but with a pleasant sweetness underneath. Flavor profile takes the darkness and depth a step further, interlacing chocolate, toffee, vanilla bean, coffee and roasty and toasty malts together, displaying bits of bitterness and fragments of of sweetness. It doesn't present a cohesive, sequential flavor profile, instead hitting spurts of flavor here and there. Mouth feel is medium-thick with a velvety texture that carries a little graininess across the middle. Overall, great depth and darkness with this one drinking like a bite of bitter dark chocolate, and that's in a good way.

On nitro at Rocky Top Beer BBQ. Pours a dark black color with 2 inches of creamy light brown head. Lots of lacing. Aromas of vanilla, espresso, coffee, roasted malts and dark chocolate. The taste is roasted coffee, dark chocolate, espresso and vanilla. Creamy mouthfeel from the nitro. Roasted coffee and butter dark chocolate finish.

I'm trying this at the brewery. It poured an opaque dark with tan head that isn't leaving any lace. The scent had hints of roast. The taste started with dark chocolate that eventually turned to a coffee finish. The mouthfeel is lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall it's a decent beer....worth a try for sure.

Pours a rich black with a brown head that dissipates swiftly. Smell is pleasantly chocolatey with a good hit of vanilla and a muted coffee note. It dissipates quickly with the head though. Flavor is muted, very creamy, little to no coffee but a strong vanilla. Reminds me of the flavor of an irish creme drink i used to get out of a coffee machine in a warehouse i worked in. Not unpleasant but surprisingly thin for such a complicated beer. Very smooth on the palette, not as full as one might expect from a stout. Not a bad beer but probably a let down based on all the words on the label. There are other places i would go for a bourbon barrel vanilla coffee stout.

Tasted in a pint glass from draught at Firkin on September 1, 2017. A nicely balanced milk stout. Not too much sweetness from the vanilla. Not too bitter from the coffee.
