Appearance - Beer comes out of the bottle somewhat light in color, but by the time the glass is full, it's a rich mahogany. Do you know...where you're going to? Head fizzles down fairly quickly, very gentle film of foam on the top, and a nice 1 mm thick ring around the edge of the glass.

Smell - VERY nice. Roasted espresso, maybe some vanilla bean, just a touch of earthy hopness.

Taste - Perfect blend of sweet and bitter. The beer is a little colder than it's supposed to be served at - so at first, there is limited flavor. As it warms on the palate, a rich array of flavors dances out. Pipe tobacco, roasted malt, gentle vanilla, espresso, only the slightest hint of hop action.

Mouthfeel - Not as thick as it ought to be...although nicely carbonated. It expands on the tongue, and coats the palate with a tasty residue, finishes pretty wet. It would be hard to drink a lot of these.

Overall - I am impressed. I used to disdain bocks in general - this may have reopened my mind to them. Thanks Dark Horse.

Bottled September 5th 2013 and poured into a shaker pint May 9th 2014. $2.19 single.

Appearance: Initially pours a crystal clear brown color, but near the end of the bottle when all the sediment pours in, it changes into a diarrhea water color that's extremely hazy with a few floaters going around. There's about a finger of tan, soapy head, and no lacing. Head slims down to about half a finger and stays all the way through the drink, which is great, and why I've given this a 4.

Smell: It smells like wet coffee grounds. It really does. There's also a dopplebock-y malt sweetness in it that keeps it from being overbearing. Simple aroma, and also pretty faint -- based on the aroma, you wouldn't expect the bold flavors that come through.

Taste/feel: Oh, man! That's really nice. Coffee ground sort of flavor is strong, but the bitterness is pretty low thanks to a heavy amount of malty sweetness (due in large part to the style itself). Coffee all the way through this beer and almost nothing else but subtle sweet, bready qualities from the malt. No fruitiness that I can tell, no hoppiness -- nothing. The carbonation was a bit unexpected, as the carbonation is high and really prickly on the front of the tongue at first, but then it almost foams up a bit and just adds some more body to a medium bodied beer.

I should have figured Dark Horse wouldn't let me down, despite the disappointing aroma. The coffee grounds as opposed to full coffee beans give an interesting coffee flavor that's not often found in coffee beers -- it's more "gritty" tasting. This really as excellent coffee infused beer combined with a nice choice in style. The dopplebock and coffee combination is brilliant, as the sweet malts and bitter coffee grounds come together to make a beer that drinks awesomely, and tastes even better.

12 oz bottle served in a lager glass.
Pours clear copper-brown with a massive, foamy bone head. It took several pours and some patience to get the whole bottle into the glass.

Unappealing odor, characterized by wet earth, used coffee grinds and wet grains. Followed by a decent flavor with some swet and roasted malts and a good bit of coffee.

Feel: smooth medium body with a bubbly feel.

O: likely a contaminated bottle; 1st such ever from Dark Horse. Will re-review with another bottle from a different source.

A- pours a brownish amber color with a finger head that disappears to leave little lacing around the side

S- smells of roasted malts with hints of peppers, a little like charred habeneros

T- light taste that starts with lighter malty taste with a coffe taste to follow

M- light and easy drinking

O- not my favorite, wasn't really sure what to expect and was left a little disappointed. The coffee was not as present as I would have liked
