12oz bottle from IAmJacksHopTongue (thanks man!). No identifiable bottle date. Served in my trusty Phish snifter.

Pours a barely transparent deep garnet hue with a finger and a half of ecrue head. Maintains a thin layer throughout and leaves small specks of lace.

Coffee dominates the nose but I also catch hints of burnt caramel, toffee and Anaheim peppers.

Coffee is the predominant note again in the taste. Much like the smell, there is lots of coffee followed by burnt caramel, subtle toffee and that strange chili pepper flavor. A nice blend. Very different than other dopplebocks.

Medium feel with plenty of carbonation. Caramel infused coffee finish.

Much more coffee than dopplebock. And it's very strange how my senses- both smell and taste- perceive Anaheim chiles in the mix. But all around enjoyable, provided you like coffee.

Appearance, even with a careful pour generated a massive amount of head. While the beer is light enough to be noticeably cloudy. Cloudy is not a bad thing by itself but in this case it looks almost muddy.

Smell: Massive amount of coffee, though sadly it comes across as burnt coffee. Some interesting cream and chocolate notes in there as well, so not completely lost. Also an interesting note of pumpernickel bread.

Taste: Nice and very refreshing, coffee adds a nice kick, but for the most part a plethora of hops and spiced dark bread. This beer is predominantly grains and grain sweetness, but incredibly enjoyable, like drinking a very good and hearty bread.

Mouthfeel is almost effervescent, incredibly refreshing and popping the whole time.

Overall a very enjoyable beer, just wish the smell had less burnt coffee and poured with less head. The head has an incredibly burnt coffee taste.

The beer was a murky brown. I poured it to 2 fingers of head. It had good retention with a thick froth and good lace.

Malt and java were the aromas I captured.

I tasted rich malt with a hint of caramel. And java. Java out the wazoo.

The mouthfeel was smooth and medium bodied. Carbonation was just right, a slight bite.

ruddy reddish brown with a gigantic, foamy almost yellow head that filled the glass on a fairly conservative pour. some sediment left in bottle and some poured into beer unintentionally.

nose is basically coffee grounds with some light toffee and toast in the background.

lots of coffee flavor. very roasty with some hop bitterness as well i think. dry overall.

over-carbonated as head suggested. way too prickly to the point of interfering with flavor. by the time the fizz subsides you are left with a bitterness that is vague in nature. lots of coffee breath after an long coffee linger.

funny that the name is Perkulator because this beer tastes just like my mom's coffee that she made and still makes in her 60's percolator. i really want to like this beer. i think it is probably a good recipe but the carbonation is an issue. hopefully it was just my bottle or my batch and not how the beer is intended. without the fizz it would be a really nice coffee beer.

Pour, be careful with this one foam everywhere so pour gentle. Murky brown color with a hug foamy light tan head that falls really slow with gobs of lace.

Aroma is coffee but lighter type of coffee then i drink, some good brown sugary malt notes with light nut aroma mingle through out.

Taste is dominated by the coffee, big coffee on a brown sugar malt base that tries to sneak out from the coffee notes. Finish is lingering astringent coffee notes along with some nut hints. Taste is not as good as nose little one sided to the coffee.

Mouthfeel is little light for the style which may be due to the carbonation that's little to peppy for me.

Overall might be hard to improve on a great style like a dopplebock, though it did smell pretty nice.

A- Pours a deep amber to medium brown in color with a very large, dense head. Retention is very good, as is the lacing. The head is so dense that it looks like it could have been on nitro. Translucent when held to light despite the darker color.

S- This beer smells almost entirely of cold coffee. Just a hint of dark and biscuity malts make it through the coffee. Coffee scent isn't of a terribly dark roast, but rather a light to medium coffee.

T- Starts with a big dose of coffee that doesn't go away anytime soon. There is just a little bit of biscuity malts under the coffee, mainly detectable with just a bit of a metallic taste. This beer's flavor is fairly one dimensional in the coffee department, with just the smallest amount of brown malts.

M- Rather light in body for a dopplebock and a medium level of carbonation. Alcohol is undetectable and coffee isn't overwhelming, so this is rather easy to drink. The dense, frothy head smooths this one out a little bit, would just like this one to be a little thicker.

Overall, this is a coffee lover's beer. You can drink this repeatedly and get a steady dose of coffee flavor that is usually reserved for breakfast and coffee stouts, and best of all, you get it with only 7% ABV.

a brown ale base to a dopplebock lager with a boatload of coffee flavor, how can you go wrong? on tap at j ryans in at least a partial dark horse tap takeover, this was one of my favorite beers from them. pale caramel brown color with a bit of yeast in suspension and an inch of cream foam. the nose is coffee heavy, with some darker german malts and chocolate malts, smells like a brown ale more than a dopplebock, but its a good fusion on the malt front. the coffee isn't a dominant flavor, while its prominent, its also in balance with the sweeter grain bill and with the other elements at work here, which are earthy and dusty and wintery, all feelings more than flavors, but present to varying degrees as clear as day. no acidity at all form the coffee, plenty of cocoa notes in the finish too, a great combination of flavors a little more nuanced than a lot of coffee beers. a little sweet, and a little too much body to be all day drinkable, but I really like whats going on here.

This is the worst coffee flavored beer I have ever had. It was over-carbonated. You could tell as soon as the cap came off. It produced a too large head. I love good rich, roasty coffee. The coffee flavor and aroma in this beer was like the stuff at the office that was bad coffee to begin with and then has been sitting on the warming pad too long. Was this awful flavor covering up a good malty doppelbock? Who could tell?

Horrible. I did not finish the bottle. Unfortunately I have another bottle that I bought at Woodman's in the $1 per bottle mix six-pack pile. Hopefully it is from a better batch.

Very thick looking brown pour topped with a tall hat of light tan foam, that pretty well settles in, and takes minutes to fully recede. Nice look in the pint glass for sure.

Coffee the main attraction, neutral sweet the supporting cast, with some other aromas I swear reminded me of a bit of cream, and bitter chocolate in that coffee. Really nice, just wanna leave my nose near rim and enjoy.

Woaahh, wish I knew my coffees well enough to describe the roast of this flavor, leave it to say it is even more prevalent in the taste. Neutral sweet with lightest caramel try to balance, admirably. There are some other roasty notes in there, from the malt, I believe, maybe hops? They come out as the sip ends, but make no mistake this is all about the coffee, and riffing on a theme with the other flavors.

Medium body, carb. a touch high , with a finish that is extremely strong, not always as clean as possible. Beer's worst feature.

Not traditional by any stretch, but an easy recommend for the strong coffee stout lover. If you like 'em to be all about the coffee, as do I, you will love this one.

This beer has a medium brown color, a bit thick so as to give it a somewhat murky look, with a red tint in it. The head, a lighter tan shade, is neither impressive nor unimpressive in stature or composition, though the quantity and heaviness of the lacing is fairly impressive.
Malts hold a good structure, caramel and toast, with coffee grounds pulling in. Underneath is a bit of char and something like baked sugar (?), and there's just a ghost of something like grains. it's on the unusual side, Americanized in its own way. Coffee is pretty fresh, though not as much as in the flavor
A bit more hops come through with a grassy note on the tongue, but there remains a very malty base to this beer. It's a bit breadier, toasty really, with coffee coming in at moderate strength. Dark fruits make their way in, eventually more like tart apple flesh, under a slight heat.
I like the body to be bigger in a doppel, but it holds its own. Ultimately, it's about medium in strength, fairly dry, not overly crisp but slightly more than it is smooth.

Pours a hazy, deep ruby hue. Great color. Head retention and lacing are minimal. (3.5)

Aroma is malty, has some coffee and a hint of DMS. Good specialty malt aroma of biscuit and chocolate. (3.5)

Flavor is malty and rich, with a strong coffee component coming through. The more I drink, the more I realize that the coffee flavor is too strong, manifesting itself as a cheap, stale coffee flavor rather than something more nuanced. At least it's not too sweet. Moutfheel is full-bodied and slick. (2.5, 3.5)

Decent Doppelbock that is ruined by the coffee gimmick. Some breweries just don't get it. Don't mess with classic styles. The Doppelbock style is about MALT, not added spices and flavorings. At least don't try to call it a Doppelbock if you're going to brew something as mediocre as this beer. (2)

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance is a mostly clear reddish brown. Seems a bit too carbonated, had to give it a slow pour.

Aroma is exploding with wonderful smells of coffee. It's hard to get much more since the coffee is so dominant but there's charred wood and I think I might be picking up some slight caramel notes way beneath the coffee.

The taste is again dominated by the coffee. However I am now definitely picking up some caramel notes and a bit of dark fruit hidden in the back. Coffee lasts throughout into the linger where some of the more subtle notes make themselves known.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, pretty clean, and somewhat creamy. Pretty easy to drink, but you have to like coffee.

As a traditional Doppelbock this was not even close but as a coffee beer this stuff is the tops. If you are into coffee beers this is a must.

A: This poured a nearly opaque mahogany with fluffy light tan head.
S: It smelled like jalapeno peppers and tobacco ash, with a little coffee grounds and earthy nuts and rusty copper.
T: It tasted like jalapeno peppers and tobacco ash, with a little copper hops and nutty malt. It had a dirty aftertaste.
M: It was somewhat thick with a little carbonation. Ok body.
D: This was gross. Not sure if it was just a bad bottle or if this beer is always nasty. But I didn't like anything about the scent or taste or body. Tough to choke this down, might be a drain pour.

One of a few random Dark Horse bottles that I picked up without having tried before. Served in a Pilsener glass. Pours a medium-dark brown color with an opaque body. There was a crazy amount of head development as I poured, but that dissipated after about 10 minutes and there wound up being not much lacing. The smell is mild, with the coffee and malt coming through in equal proportions. The taste leans heavily to the coffee - and I really enjoy that aspect. It's not terribly complex but it doesn't need to be. The mouthfeel is a little odd, but it's hard to put my finger on the reason. Overall I really enjoyed this beer. Dopplebocks can be rather unassuming, but I think the coffee addition makes this beer stand out.

A: clear light brown, decent sustaining creamy head
S: absolutely like brewing coffee. Obviously that's probably not typical of the general doppelbock style, but considering it's a coffee beer, it nails it
T: tastes like a weak coffee, or maybe even a little bit like an old-time coffee house (including the cigarettes). That probably sounds worse than I mean it, because it is very interesting. I assume it's an attempt to be a coffee-stoudt equivalent in lager form. Tall order, but not badly done, in my opinion.
M: not much here, there is a lingering bitterness, coffee-twinged but I can sense some earthy hops as well. Better than expected, but weak in the grand scheme.
O: I liked this beer as a novelty. Even though it's listed as a doppelbock, I'm not sure it really belongs there given its characteristics. Then again, I'm not sure what it would fit into.

Pours dark muddy brown, under a long lasting and frothy mocha head. Head leaves low sheeting and decent bands of lace.

Dark malts and just a hint of chocolate on the nose.

Malty and sweet , with notes of milk chocolate and cafe au lait on the palate.

Decent, but there is something about the mouthfeel that is holding me back from rating this one higher.

I've long been afraid of bocks. Considered them the bitter German dregs of already bitter German beer. Basically the beer equivalent of marijuana resin....er, so I hear. Despite mild intrigued, I've passed this by in the store many times. After seeing on tap at Dusty's and giving a 1/2 oz pour a test drive, hey, this ain't so bad! Let's try it.

Coffee bomb. If you don't like coffee, or don't like it in your beer, this is not the drink for you. Fortunately I love coffee in nearly everything. The small is Folger's or something. Malt and grains follow meekly in the background. For me, this is a good thing. Goes down dangerously easy. But is also very sweet. I suspect that might contribute to the drinkability and get tiresome after a while.

I have been down on Dark Horse lately. I've sent some bottles out in trades to people who expressed mild disappointment in them, and while I like PT5 and BBPT5, I don't like them as much as the masses and don't see what the fuss is all about. I really enjoyed this beer, though and it has me reconsidering DH as an upper-echelon brewery.

This doppelbock sets up with a dark brown to almost black coloring with a thick, THICK, brown head.

The scent is a tad too weak with coffee and an earthy tone. The tell tale stout aromas seem to be a bit lost but the earth tones are strong.

The flavor as a very natural, earthy and organic taste. I get some habenero pepper kick, capsaicin flavor and then a coffee bean. The organic bean flavor is more prominent than a roasted character. This tends to hold less stout flavors but really highlights the more natural aspects of coffee beans.

The feel is nicely slick, almost viscous or creamy, with a dry feel too. This holds a lot of schizophrenia like qualities which makes it a truly interesting beer.

Super-cloudy, chunky, muddy brown with no real color seeping through light. Head looks scummy. Looks downright awful.

Sweet oxidized malts, spent coffee grounds, malty raisin, gooey toffee, Fig Newtons, Cherry Kijafa, red grape, no hop.

Cinnamon-flavored coffee, earthy grain, roastiness, overripe cherry, bruised fruit, cherry cordial creme, hazelnut, sweet wafers, vinous fruits, evergreen hop lite, and powdery yeastcake nuttiness.

Bitterly drying. The coffee helps chalk up the feel further. Astringent in the mouth due to the cottony texture. Carbonation is a low-level contributor.

The flavor of coffee works for the style, but the overall effort backfired. Either that, or this bottle isn't that fresh. How would I know without any bottle date info?

Pours dark brown with reddish hue and a small head. Aroma is coffe and pepper spice. Interesting combo. Lots of coffee up front with light fruit flavor and spice on the finish. Lingering coffee flavor. Prickly carbonation, but heavier body than expected (medium mouthfeel). Nice changeup, though the spice is a bit strange with the coffee. Overall a decent brew.

Poured from the bottle into a pilsner style glass.

Real nice looker off the pour. Deep reddish brown, and opaque, with large amounts of thin carbonation. Head forms majestically, large with perfect even bubbles throughout it's four and three finger tall construction. Lots of soapy retention, but eventually settles, great looking beer.

Good ripping coffee bean on the nose. Mellow hop angle perhaps a little earth but highly malt forward with caramel as to be expected. Coffee angle on this is quite fresh and pipping real nice example.

Palate brings light coffee richness on first sip. Finish is a little bit metallic. Playful carbonation with a little bit of grapefruit hop citrus quenching qualities. Juicy strangely, with a muted malt caramel and a good coffee angle that turns to milk chocolate.

Overall a real fun example of coffee in a doppelbock, probably the best one I've had to date.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 9/5/2013. Pours lightly hazy deep ruby red color with a 2 finger dense and rocky light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a ton of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of dark roasted coffee, caramel, chocolate, toast, toffee, brown bread, light raisin, light apple, and yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance of coffee, malt, and yeast notes; with decent strength. Taste of dark roasted coffee, caramel, chocolate, toast, toffee, apple, raisin, brown bread, and yeast earthiness. Lingering notes of coffee, chocolate, roast, toast, toffee, apple, raisin, brown bread, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice balance and complexity of malt, coffee, and yeast notes; with a fair amount of robustness and no cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a moderately creamy, smooth, and crisp mouthfeel that is good; could use more body though. Alcohol is well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is a good doppelbock style. Good balance and complexity of coffee, malt, and yeast ester flavors; and very smooth to drink for the ABV. Not as malty robust as I was hoping for, but still a nicely enjoyable offering.

Pours far brown with a 2 finger light tan head and lots of carbonation.

Nose has huge caramel malt sweet smell to it that is well balanced out with a good amount of roasted coffe notes that work very well together. Clean yeast lets the ingredients really come through.

Taste has a good amount of sweet caramel malt malt that blends very nicely with the roasted notes from the coffee. Some very sligh herbal hops come in at the end along with a little bit of residue sweetness.

Mouthfeel is interesting. Very high carbonation and a medium body leaves this very drinkable yet not too thin. Perfect for fall.

A: Pours an opaque but cloudy deep amber in color with minimal amounts of gentle visible carbonation, some dark yeast particles in suspension near the bottom of the glass, and moderate amounts of cola brown highlights. The beer has a finger tall dense foamy tan head that slowly reduces to a thick film covering the entire surface of the beer with a slightly thicker ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate to strong aromas of slightly burnt coffee (like the coffee that has been left on the burner way too long - usually at someplace like a gas station) over roasted malts and some hints of peppery yeast.

T: Upfront there is a solid malt body with some hints of caramel sweetness that is quickly overtaken by the moderate to strong flavors of slightly burnt coffee. Light hints of peppery yeast towards the finish with a hint of earthy hops. Light to moderate amounts of bitterness which linger for quite a while but fade away.

M: On the lighter side of medium bodied with moderate to heavy amounts of carbonation. Slightly thin.

O: I had high hopes for this beer but having tried it twice now, I guess it is just not the beer for me. I really get the taste of coffee that has been left on the burner for way too long (and not great coffee at that). The mouthfeel is really light for the doppelbock style and other comparable beers - almost like iced coffee was poured into the beer.

A: Pours a dark brown with notes of amber around the edges, with 1/2 inch of light tan head that dissipates quickly, leaving very little lacing.

S: Strong coffee smell, not very much else, but still very pleasant.

T: First flavor is strong coffee and creamy malt, but surprisingly not that bitter. Very little hop presence.

M: Initial feeling is light body, but there are traces of heaviness as the beer travels. Moderate amounts of carbonation.

O: Overall, this beer is very drinkable, especially at its price point.
