look: 4.5 | smell: 4 | taste: 4 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 4

Glass: Odell Tulip Stemmed Glass.

Appearance: Dark black, syrupy on the pour. An aggressive pour produces a half finger of tan-chocolate head. Head quickly dissipates into a thin film that remains on top.

Smell: Chocolate forward, with a mixture between dark and milk, slightly favoring sweeter milk chocolate. Slight coffee aroma. Roasted malt, tiny hop bitterness.

Taste: Chocolate forward again, but the overall flavor is more roasted and bitter than the smell would suggest. Smokiness is present as it warms. Alcohol is present in mid-taste, a bit strongly for me.

Mouthfeel: Very syrupy. Thick, and creamy. Light carbonation.

Overall: A very good imperial stout, that suffers from a bit too much alcohol presence as well as the overly decadent and thick mouthfeel.

Poured into a tulip. Almost no head comes from a very aggressive pour. This one looks very thick during the pour. Pitch black of course. This is a little bit underwhelming.

I immediately get a bit of a boozy smell from the pour. When I stick my nose in the tulip, chocolate is dominant. A hint of roasted malt is noticed as well. I enjoy a little bit of alcohol smell, myself. I think it adds a bit of complexity and is a nice contrast to the sweetness.

Some imperial stouts are strong with roasted malts, this one has only a tough of bitter roasted flavor up front, but is dominated by mostly sweet chocolatey flavor. This is a very appealing flavor profile, as the hotness that was indicated by the aroma, is very well hidden.

The soft carbonation is perfect for the style. This is a huge beer, and thus not very drinkable, but I will enjoy the hour or so it will take to drink this one for what it is. I will definitely try this one again.
