A: super freakin' cloudy, pinkish-amber hue.... thinnish, weak head (due to sediment maybe?) - looks a mess or, worse, infected.... and I've seen the bottle, too - the label art is pretty psych-out cheezy

S: mildly custard aromas, perhaps a touch of mango.... mostly a fragrant but muddy orange scent with a decidedly yeasty background

T: predominately creamy orange and doughy malt, bit of melon... not terribly sweet, but hardly dry... moderate, washed-out bitterness

M: up front - medium-bodied, oily.... slips away, thinning a bit on the finish... altogether fairly smooth but somewhat dull and dead as well

O: a muddy, yogurt-y (or smoothie-like) sort of IPA.... finished the glass, but i would never touch this stuff again nor recommend it.... it has potential - they ought to clean it up a bit

Finally getting the chance to try dark horse crooked tree ipa

A- hazy orange with a strong glow and minimal lacing on the edges. I love the orange body on these type of IPA's

S- strong mango with sweet flavors of pine and a slight bready malt background. The burst of citrus hops bundles with sweet flavors on the scent profile. Very inviting scent

T- great intro of mango hops coupled with the bready malt backbone I expected. Sweet caramel and an overseer bitterness at the end. Very drinkable and tasty simultaneously. Good orange flavor chimes in as well, as you take a sting on the tongue from the bitterness

M- coating flavor that I love from an ipa. Absolute good flavor

O- what a great drinkable ipa. Balanced and enjoyable. Really enjoyed this and will circle back

one of the classic American india pale ales out there, bringing new twists to a story that's been told a million times. on tap with a whole bunch of other dark horse stuff at j ryans in Syracuse, ny. the pour on this is hazy muted bronze, with minimal white head, rather unimpressive in a pint glass. the nose is great though, real woody and bitter, like its aged in oak, but I don't think it is. lots of citrus to the hop profile as well, lemon and grapefruit, with a pale malt base. the flavor is great, again with the wood and bitterness its got a lot more of an organically derived feel than so many others. the hops profile is nice, lots of zesty citrus in the finish, probably citra hops and some C varietals as well. dank but not overly oily or sappy like some of the west coast ones, more drinkable too, and without the sweetness. there is a definite woody feel to this, not sure what from, but its persistent throughout. clean finishing too for a hazy hoppy beer, with a drinkably medium body and very little residual sugar. and excellent ipa overall.

A: cloudy orange, with minor retention and good lacing
S: classic orange-and-pine IPA
T: to me, a little flat up front, yielding to a strong bitter-pine resin taste that is actually kind of surprising and refreshing given the beginning. Up front the flavors I struggle a little to differentiate are orange and earthy. In the middle, as the bitter hops takes over, the grapefruit tastes come. Pine overtakes the palette at the end.
M: dryness at end, but not much up front
O: I was hoping for a little more throughout the taste. However, for IPA fans, it's definitely worth a try

Appearance: a deep orange almost red. Good clarity but not perfect. About a finger of off white head that leaves a lacing

Smell: hop medley, citrus, pine, floral. Some slight maltiness to back it up

Taste: starts off strong with the hops. I get notes I grapefruit and a floraly-pine taste. Malts are there on the back but in a small dose. The malts and the hops clash in a way that is slightly off to me

Mouthfeel: bitter. and light as far as ipas go.

Overall: a fine and well crafted beer but for some reason this (along with other dark horse beers) just don't do it for me as I know they do for others

An impressive light tan head rises to about two fingers in height, firm and stiff, almost like a darker colored meringue. It takes time to settle and leaves plenty on top of the deep, hazy copper-colored brew for the remainder. Patches tossing some legging down as they go reach from the top to the bottom of the glass.
There's a whole lot of West Coast character to this IPA. Raw, woody green stem, citrus rind, pine resin, and some pith balance a bit of grapefruit flesh, and floral notes are also strong. Some caramel notes add balancing sweetness, complementing the hops bouquet nicely while allowing it to take charge.
Rind, flora and grapefruit are strongest on the note with a light metallic touch and a little woody dryness. Grapefruit lingers over it all throughout.
This is a crisp beer with a pretty deep feel and a nice smoothness in a medium body.

On draft at TJ Finley's, Bayshore, NY.

Poured a hazy dark brassy hue with a one finger frothy white head. There was good retention and sticky lacing.

The smell featured round malts with tropical fruit and herbal hops.

The taste consisted of subtly sweet malts, apricot, and a bit of pepper.

The mouthfeel was full for the style and a touch creamy with a lingering pepper.

Overall a well balanced IPA.

A: A cloudy orange color, almost tan, left a nice two finger of off white head at the top, with a good amount of lacing around the glass.

S: Lots of floral and citrus notes with a bready backbone on the nose.

T: This brew was very bready for an IPA, up front some bitterness with floral and tropical fruit throughout.

M: light to medium bodied, a good amount of carbonation somewhat of a dry finish.

O: I visited this brewery on 4/6/13, was a very cool atmosphere and was very impressed with the beer selection, this was a good IPA.

This is a really good IPA. I bought a 1/6 keg off of a recommendation and I was rather surprised. First pull revealed a nice creamy head, not to thick but a nice lacing on the glass. ( I use the Sam Adams tech glasses for first time hoppy beers) First whiff of the beer was very subtle but could catch hoppy and biscuity notes. Appearance is orange in color and a little cloudy at first but cleared up a few pulls. Taste leaves a nice hoppy presence and rounds out with just enough malt but still keeping it dry. No crystal malt here. Good dry finish with the hops shining through especially for an average ABV. IPA. Mouth feel is a little thin but that is okay because it is not a imperial or double IPA. Overall a great beer and will be looking forward to buying this beer again!

On draft at at The Avenue on Allston. Served in a pint glass.

Appearance. This beer had a small head that reduced to a thin layer. It is a hazy orange color with no clarity, but bubbles coming up through the glass. Layered lacing on the glass as the beer was drank.

Smell: Light citrus, tangerine, and orange scents. Some bready and crystal malts in the rear.

Taste: Same as above with lingering bitterness in the back of the mouth.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, medium to full bodied, medium carbonation, and tingling bitterness.

Overall: Pretty solid beer. The bitterness is a bit much, but still a good IPA.

Served on tap at Yard House in Raleigh, NC

A: Pours a hazy golden copper in color with some moderate amounts of orange highlights and moderate to heavy amounts of visible carbonation. The beer has a finger tall foamy light beige head that slowly reduces to a very thin film covering the majority of the surface of the beer with a thick ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate to significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Light to moderate aromas of caramel malts with stronger aromas of citrus hops - lemon and orange blossom stand out.

T: Upfront there were some light amounts of caramel malt sweetness but the flavors in this beer were dominated by the citrus hops (both lemon and orange blossom). Light amounts of lingering bitterness.

M: Medium bodied with slightly heavier than moderate amounts of carbonation. Light amounts of dryness in the finish.

O: Overall a pretty enjoyable IPA from a new brewery for me (chosen from the menu without any research). Easy to drink and definitely one I would have again.

Served on tap in a pint glass

This beer pours hazy deep orange color with a white head. The nose on the beer is more subtle then the intense flavors. The beer hits first with an average bitter intensity. The first thing I notice is the feel, the feel is full bodied and has a crispness that almost reminds me of a rye beer. Speaking of rye, I get an ever so slight earthy spiciness out of the beer. However the highlight for me is the fresh hop characters. The beer has a moderate amount of citrus, ranging from lemon to pineapple. I think the most notable aspect is the pine flavor, and I mean evergreen tree type pine. This is a great IPA, Dont miss out on the Double Crooked Tree as that is one of my favorite IPA's.

On tap at 2012 Autumn Brew Review, from notes. Poured light orange amber with a light creamy foam head. Smells of orange citrus, grapefruit and pine resins. Taste replete with grapefruit pith, orange, pine and subtle pineapple. Moderately bitter. Medium bodied. Crisply carbonated. Finishes dry. Classic IPA across the board even if it doesn't stand out from the crowd it's quite tasty.

On-tap at Barley’s Smokehouse and Brewpub, Columbus, OH

A: The beer is clear amber in color and has no visible carbonation. It poured with a thin yet dense off white head that left lots of lacing on the surface and coating the sides of the glass.
S: Aromas of citrusy and pine resin hops are present in the nose.
T: A little more than a moderate amount of bitterness stands out in the overall taste, which also has notes of citrus and pine resin hops. The bitterness particularly lingers through the finish.
M: It feels medium-bodied and crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation. There is some dryness in the finish.
O: This is a very hop-forward beer and the bitterness makes it one that cannot be drank very quickly.

Mouthfeel: Mild bitterness, moderately drinkable.

A-Pours a hazy gold with a white head that dissipates very quickly. No lacing or cascading.

S-Hoppy and slightly fruity

T-Citrus hops, hint of tropical fruits, and some malty sweetness. It has a little bit of a chalky finish.

M-Nicely carbonated and pretty creamy.

D-Very, very drinkable due to its good flavor and average alcohol content.

Overall, this reminds me a lot of Two Hearted, but it has more of a sweeter and tropical fruit flavor to it. I will definitely drink this again.

This beer pours out as a nice looking copper color. The head was white with a decent lacing to it. The smell of the beer was slightly sweet with big notes of pine like citrus. The taste of the beer was full of bitter hops along with some grapefruit flavors. The mouthfeel of the beer wasn't too heavy at all, it's got a bitter lingering feeling to it. Overall I thought this was a pretty good brew.

Bronze color. The nose is fruity, in the style of IPA. It perceives the candied apple, lemon and orange.

In the mouth, the hops are invigorating, fruity and floral, but also slightly tart. The malt is pretty quiet despite softness in the palace style melted caramel. The brand remains consistent, hoppy bitterness is present everywhere.

It provides a finish and then a beer easy to drink and very nice, if not more.

Poured into regular pint glass.

A - Poured very hazy amber orange color with huge white head that quickly dissipated leaving significant lacing around the glass.

S - Very floral and citrusy smell with scents of apple, pear, caramel and hops.

T - Right off the bat starts off with citrus bitterness, slight caramel and brown sugar sweetness and very bitter hoppy finish.

M - Medium bodied with very high carbonation.

O - Not a bad IPA, somewhat refreshing but way too bitter for my taste. I would not recommend it.

Had this on 2011-09-09 in Pittsburgh, PA at the Double Wide Grill (from notes).

A - Very hazy orange and amber with a 1.5 finger head that lasts quite awhile. Good lacing.

S - Fresh fruit, bright citrus and mild spice.

T - Moderately hop forward bitterness (red grapefruit flesh) with some biscuit and caramel. There's also a nice, bright orange citrus character. Tasty, lingering aftertaste of these same flavors.

M - Light-medium body and carbonation. Prickly and moderately resinous.

O - Quite enjoyable. I'll seek it out again.

Poured from a bottle. Hazy copper color with a light white head and minimal lacing. Aroma of earthy, grassy hops and some citrus. Light malty sweetness. Tastes like it smells, and it's well-balanced though not really complex. It's a slightly above average IPA.

Medium mouthfeel with good carbonation and light bitterness. Not too bitter, so it's pretty drinkable. Not too thin. A good IPA, but not exceptional. Recommended for a once in awhile staple.

A - A fingers worth of rich creamy slightly off-white colored head... Modest at best retention... A medium golden color... Lightly carbonated... A very faint haziness... A good bit of sticky lacing clings to the glass...

S - Not much in the aroma department... The hops are surprisingly absent... Some basic notes of a solid malt backbone... A bit of a yeasty presence as well...

T - There's no hiding the hops in this one... They aren't citrusy... They aren't piney... Rather they take on a very assertive earthiness... Packs a bit of a punch... Simple and straightforward...

M - Medium bodied... Moderate carbonation... Even and consistent... Clean and crisp...

D - A straight-forward American IPA that doesn't pull any punches... More than respectable, but far from remarkable... The 6% ABV packs a surprising punch... Another solid offering from Dark Horse...
