A - Dark copper orange, almost bronze, with a slight haziness, moderate head in the pour reduces to a thin but complete white film that delivers pretty massive lacing.

S - Mostly lemon and pine - crisp and clean, but somewhat quiet overall. A subtle note of honey, as well. Overall, the nose is much like a honey lemon throat lozenge, but the most delicious one you've ever had. Initial thought is this could go either way.

T - While the flavor follows the nose, there is not much quiet here. Big hop hits of pine, lemon zest and pith, and a sweet, malty honey core. Lush, almost buttery feel, but with a strong bitter close keeps things snappy.

M - Moderate carbonation and mild drying.

O - A good choice for the hophead aiming to drink a couple down without getting trashed. There are big hop flavors, a nice malt counterpoint, and a reasonable, but not sessionable, ABV.

Pours nice amber color from 12oz. bottle. Dated 4-22-14. Good mouthfeel.
Nose is decent with good but not strong hop aroma mixed with malt sweetness. Finishes with good amount of bitterness that lingers on the tongue. Good lace all the way down to bottom of glass. This is what I would think of a great representation of a traditional American IPA.

I've been pretty partial to IPA for quite sometime. This one, however, hit the palate quite flat. The initial draw rewards the tongue with the briskness that an IPA has, but the mid-palate and finish is let down by a disappointing sour.

The color was also a disappointment; it poured a darker amber than any IPA I've seen and attribute the taste differences with other IPAs with the color changes.

All in all, simply, I wouldn't buy it again for what I paid for it. It's 'drinkable,' but once it's out of my fridge it will not be returning.

Bought a single of this at a local Meijer and it has a date of 4-24-14..so its a little over 2 months old at this point.

A - Produced a hazy deep copper beer with a one finger white head with great lacing that died down relatively fast.

S - Nice orange hops, citrus, floral, crackery. Not to complex or strong, could use a little more aroma.

T - Real bitter, cracker, lemon zest, grassy, lingering bitterness, bready. I wish it was more balanced because the malts are being hidden from the bitterness and the hops. Comes across as slightly astringent.

M - Medium bodied and soft in the mouth, with a lower level of carbonation.

O - I love IPA's but for whatever reason the high bitterness and the lack of great tasting hops is not doing it for me, it taste to lemon forward and astringent. I will not be picking anymore of these up, sorry Dark Horse I love most of your beers but not this one, Cheers.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a Sam Adams pint glass.

Comes out a cloudy orange color with a nice, two finge rhead that quickly fades to some lingering foam and some lacing on the glass.

The aroma is very nice: I get lots of citrus: grapefruit and orange with a bit of pine and a little caramel.

This beer tastes amazing. Way better than the aroma hinted. This is a very, very juicy IPA. I get tons of grapefruit and orange, a little mouth-watering juicy fruit gum and a lingering, piney dry bite at the end. As I drink more, there is some bready sweetness underneath as well.

Mouth feel is light to medium, smooth and easy.

Overall, I'll buy this again. So juicy, I expected pulp. Very nice.

Poured into spiegelau IPA glass; golden orange with a big fluffy white head that breaks leaving tons of chunky lacing and a thick topping of foam.
Smells of dank pine and tropical fruit.
Taste surprises; it's sweet, but not overpowering. Clean malt and pine bitterness comes in first, then on the swallow a wave of tropical fruit and light sugary sweetness washes over your palate.
Mouthfeel is medium-light and wet.
Overall, definitely a delicious IPA. Bit different than the usual pantheon (Jai Alai, DirtWolf, etc.) but drinkable and tasty.

Poured rom a bottle into a tulip glass at around 45 degrees Fahrenheit

Appearance: Hazy orange copper color with a frothy two finger light beige head

Smell: Orange, lemon, biscuit malt

Taste: Pine, grapefruit, spicy hops with a big malt backbone. Fairly balanced. the aftertaste is pleasant

Mouthfeel: Light medium body; Moderate carbonation and bitterness throughout

Overall: Good but not great. Nice balance, but nothing wows me. This actually reminds me of Torpedo with the earthy hop character. I can think of many, many IPAs better than this one and will likely pass over this more times than not. However, it's a solid offering from a solid brewery, and recommended to try atleast once. Cheers!

12oz bottle, date stamped 3.14.14
L - gentle decant reveals a thin but frothy ivory head that caps a hazed darker amber colored ale
S - caramel with pungent grapefruit rind and faint orange, some fruitiness in there as well
T - pungent again with grapefruit rind puckering the palate, caramel and toasted grain provide a bit of sweetness with some fruitiness present also, black tea leaf lingers with grapefruit pith
F - medium body with a very dry, lingering bitter finish
O - more punishing than I remember, great for hopheads who enjoy a pungent grapefruit flavor. It seems out of balance to me, but I still like it.

12 oz bottle at fridge temp into a snifter. Bottled 4 22 14 (1 month old)

Pours out a dark orange almost bronze color. Darker than your standard IPA. Not much head off the pour and quickly fades to a thin ring.

Juicy hops, big dose of fresh pine, grapefruit, hop resins.

Great taste. Lots of dank, resinous hops. Juicy, pine, and citrus. Leaves lots of resinous bitterness. A slight awareness of alcohol. Only a touch of malt provides a nice backbone to all the hops.

Slightly sticky mouthfeel. Medium in body.

Really nice IPA. Huge dose of hops.

A: Quite dark, one of the darkest IPAs I have seen, almost brown. Medium low carbonation, nice head retention, hazy.
S: Very nice aroma, grapefruit, orange, citrus, slight pine, smells a bit sweet, inviting.
T: Interesting, Mostly grapefruit taste, very strong bitterness, noticable alcohol (a bit disappointing for a 6.5% beer). A lot of malt character, caramel, almost chocolate. This could have been a bit darker and been a very good black IPA. I like my typical American IPAs a bit lighter, drier, less sweet. The noticable booze is a bit of a turnoff also. Still, it is not a bad tasting beer, just a bit flawed. Becomes a bit estery as it warms.
M: Medium full, too high. Carbonation is good.
O: A good IPA, nice hop flavor, needs less malt character, needs to be a bit drier, and that alcohol twang (fuselly maybe? I've had half and feel a headache coming on) needs to go. Borderline recommend.

First IPA that I tried and actually enjoyed! A very smooth IPA. The citrus and hoppy flavors go well with a wide variety of food. Large amount of toffee/caramel flavors. Has a sweet taste with a little bitterness as an aftertaste. Nice light orange color with a white head.

Citrus base with grapefruit and oranges. Flavor nice and balanced. Large amount of grain and toffee malts. Hops are a nice balance of citrus and floral. Hazy amber color with soapy head and lace. Dark. Best served in a shaker. More of a sweet malt finish than a hoppy one.

huge head. foamy and white.
typical IPA aromas, but nothing stand-out. kind of a bland smell to the brew....
a little sweet on the tongue at first, then some caramel malt, and the slight hop bitterness hits as it drains.... very good taste with some sweetness.
overall, very good. another new Midwest brew for me. lots of taste (as opposed to the west coast bitter) but starting to see a definite trend... maybe that's why the west coast began doing bitter....?

Poured 12oz bottle into New Belgium globe no date??

A-The beer pours to a cloudy orange color with a 1/2 finger white head that dissipated. Ok lacing. Some sediment.

S-The aroma has a pine, slight citrus note to it.

T-The taste is more forward with some hop citrus bitterness to it.

M-Slight carbonation with a nice mouthfeel.

O-Average IPA for me might have to try find one with a date to be sure of freshness

A: Poured from the bottle into a pint glass. Body is hazy copper with a smallish (half-finger) off-white head. No lacing.

S: Modest lemony citrus over bready malt. Not terribly strong in the nose, but a good IPA scent to it.

T: Caramel malt foundation is followed by tea-like hops: herbal, floral and citrusy (orange peel and lemons). Finishes semi-dry with a touch of both sweetness and then lingering bitterness.

M: Very active, fizzy carbonation; heft is medium in weight.

O: A good American IPA. Doesn't blow me away, but it's enjoyable.

Pours amber with a nice-sized off-white head that leaves lacing.

The smell is of pine and citrus with caramel and black pepper.

The taste is of pine/resin with citrus and pepper. It has a sweet caramel touch that keeps it from being harsh. It has a bitter, dry finish.

It has a chewy medium body.

This is a heavily hopped IPA with a rounding sweetness. Slight alcohol is noticeable, but well-integrated. This is an excellent example of a standard American IPA! Very enjoyable!

Poured a golden body with two finger head and lace ring down glass. Elegant aroma that balances a large chunk of citric hops and some fruit sweetness as well as some caramel malt. Beer is light, easy drinking fare, that has a large amount of hops that a hophead could like with a little bit of sweetness and bread malt to fill out the body. Pretty simple but good IPA.

A: Pours a hazy amber with a thin, clinging white head.

S: Aromas of lemon, blood orange, grapefruit, lime, pine, tangerine, herbs, caramel, and biscuit predominate on the nose.

T: Delicate notes of lemon, lime, grapefruit, blood orange, tangerine, kumquats, pine, herbs, crackers, biscuits, and caramel wash across the palate. The finish is bitter and intense with grapefruit, lemon, kumquat, pine, caramel, and biscuit flavors in abundance.

M: Medium in body and typically resinous. Carbonation is rather prickly.

O: A rock solid IPA. I appreciate the fact that it is unfiltered, although I did not feel the lack of filtration added anything new to the flavor. In the end, I like this beer, but I am not certain I can really relate to the hype that seems to surround it.

A: super freakin' cloudy, pinkish-amber hue.... thinnish, weak head (due to sediment maybe?) - looks a mess or, worse, infected.... and I've seen the bottle, too - the label art is pretty psych-out cheezy

S: mildly custard aromas, perhaps a touch of mango.... mostly a fragrant but muddy orange scent with a decidedly yeasty background

T: predominately creamy orange and doughy malt, bit of melon... not terribly sweet, but hardly dry... moderate, washed-out bitterness

M: up front - medium-bodied, oily.... slips away, thinning a bit on the finish... altogether fairly smooth but somewhat dull and dead as well

O: a muddy, yogurt-y (or smoothie-like) sort of IPA.... finished the glass, but i would never touch this stuff again nor recommend it.... it has potential - they ought to clean it up a bit

Has a hazy, translucent brown color, with a small bit of white head. Smells of spruce and a touch of citrus. I don’t get a dry finish so much as a surprisingly sweet finish. It’s a nice touch. Flavor is spruce and citrus, with some medium bitterness. An enjoyable IPA.

Appearance: Caramel. Minimal lace. Tons of sediment.
Smell: Grapefruit, fruit, citrus.
Taste: Grapefruit, tangerine, malt.

This is great. First you're drawn into this thick caramel colored liquid that has so much sediment wandering around. Then, it's citrus all around. The grapefruit hits your nose like a hammer, and the tangerine sip just seals the deal. If you like IPAs, get this. The tangerine taste is so interesting. I would definitely get this again.

Another awesome ipa from another awesome Michigan brewer. Pours a beautiful hazy Orange with a very small head of off white foam which dissipates to a very nice, lasting lacing. The aroma is all grapefruit and pine, almost reminiscent of fresh mangoes. It Sips smooth but with a body that coats the mouth very nicely. The flavor is what really takes this one to the next level. Super hoppy and bitter but well balanced. Lots of citrus and pine and very fresh tasting. This is definitely a go to ipa. Extra points for my favorite designed tap handle in the business.

Finally getting the chance to try dark horse crooked tree ipa

A- hazy orange with a strong glow and minimal lacing on the edges. I love the orange body on these type of IPA's

S- strong mango with sweet flavors of pine and a slight bready malt background. The burst of citrus hops bundles with sweet flavors on the scent profile. Very inviting scent

T- great intro of mango hops coupled with the bready malt backbone I expected. Sweet caramel and an overseer bitterness at the end. Very drinkable and tasty simultaneously. Good orange flavor chimes in as well, as you take a sting on the tongue from the bitterness

M- coating flavor that I love from an ipa. Absolute good flavor

O- what a great drinkable ipa. Balanced and enjoyable. Really enjoyed this and will circle back

12 oz brown bottle with awesome label. Beautiful brilliant blue color paired with a bright green make a real vibrant and eye catching design. Throw in the bonsai and its pretty killer. Poured into a standard American pint glass.

A - bright orange color with the haze giving it a more burnt look to it out of the light. Wonderful funk particles and sediment Floating about, just as the side of the packaging states. Bright shade of white head wasnt massive, but still pretty nice. Some fluff to it and it settled quite nice leaving some fairly good stick.

S - grapefruit and light pine up front. Nice balance between fruity hops and bread like malt backbone. A real nice gushing orange note creeps up and stands out with other smaller hints of lemon.

T - grapefruit and pine like hops up front with a blast of awesome hop spice. Real juicy and gushing fruitiness to the flavor. The juiciest, gushing orange notes set off a spectacle inside my mouth. Perfectly balanced with bread and cracker like malt. The finish picks back up with more grapefruit hop notes and really taking on a exceptional dry bitterness.

M - medium bodied and smooth. Texture is close to perfect for its size and does well coating the entire mouth with luscious notes of ipa goodness. Easy to drink and just plain awesome. This is one of the most well balanced ipa's I've ever had.

O - Crooked Tree is simply a stunning work of art. Maybe the greatest ipa I've ever had. West Coast my tail... This is a world class take on keeping an ipa complex and perfectly balanced. It's my new go to ipa. This is Michigan brewing at its absolute greatest. A grand gem and crown jewel no matter who you stack it up against in its range of abv.

Bottled 09/18/2014 Drinking on 10/21/2014

A- This particular bottle had an untypical amount of yeast in it leading to a pretty hazy burnt orange color, usually it is a pretty bright beer. Two finger white head.

S- Spicy, getting a real overripe banana, grapefruit.

T- Spicy, floral, bit of pine, grapefruit.

M- Medium, typical IPA carb level.

O- A decent IPA just kind of middle of the road though. Not on the level of Two Hearted or even Founders Centennial.
