Pours an opaque deep black with a modest frothy mocha head.

Aroma is roasty and coffee dominant, with cocoa and dark black cherry adding complexity. Cocoa dominates, in the end.

Flavor reveals more cocoa initially, with roast malt, coffee, and char rounding out the slightly bitter finish. There's an underlying cherry character that's pleasant. Oats are not too distinct.

Body is fairly full, slightly creamy, with modest carbonation and light alcohol warmth.

Not quite as oaty as some, but a nice balance of roast and cocoa. Very drinkable. The chocolate and cherry meld well together.

Pours extremely dark black, engine oil. Brown head. The head could be bigger and have more retention, but it smells of amazing dark chocolate. Taste is chocolate, very smooth from oats, a little sweetness, and some spicyness from the hops, and I think there is a little roastyness behind all that...
This beer is fantastic

Note: 2012 Vintage

A: Pours a thick opaque yet clear jet black in color with light to moderate amounts of gentle visible carbonation along the edges of the glass and just a hint of very dark cola brown highlights. The beer has a half finger tall dense foamy dark mocha head that slowly fades to a thick film covering the entire surface of the beer and a medium thick ring at the edges of the glass. Light amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate to strong flavors of dark roasted, almost charred malts with moderate notes of chocolate and licorice/anise.

T: Upfront there is a moderate to strong flavor of dark roasted and charred malts with some hints of burnt malts. There is a moderate flavor of dark bittersweet chocolate and just a hint of coffee. Light amounts of licorice/anise are also present in the finish. Moderate amounts of bitterness which lingers for quite a while.

M: Medium bodied with light amounts of carbonation. Smooth, almost creamy with a light amount of alcohol warming in the finish.

O: Not as smooth as I expected for an oatmeal stout, though that might be due to the higher ABV than I normally find in the style. There are lots of complex malty flavors and a decent amount of bitterness though the taste of alcohol is very well hidden. Very enjoyable.

Poured into a New Belgium goblet. No freshness date.

A- Pours a fully opaque black color with a 1/4 inch brown head that doesn't retain long before becoming a thin ring around the edge of the glass and a small side patch of surface foam.

S- Deep dark roasted malt with notes of dark chocolate, nuts and molasses. Almost smells barrel-aged with how intense it is plus the considerable booze fume.

T- Bitter dark roast and more chocolate. A bit sweet with the alcohol superbly hidden. The only thing making it not perfect is this slight metallic flavor in the aftertaste. Once the retained sediment in the bottle is introduced, the taste becomes even more chocolaty.

M- Semi-creamy with medium-low carbonation and the fullest of bodies.

O- This is dangerously drinkable and quite tasty.

Bottle is undated, probably 2.5 years old (late 2011). Bottlecap & seal are in great shape. Pours pitch black with a 1/2 finger dark brown, rusty head. Bubbly head dissipated quickly, revealing a viscous, glassy top. Smell is roasted malt, coffee, some bitterness or sourness. Pretty big nose, even when cold. Taste is tangy sweet up-front, reminiscent of berries. This immediately leads to a strong roasted malt flavor: coffee, dark chocolate. Farther back some sweetness, more roast, LOTS of roast. Finish is lots of lingering roast, some hop bitterness too. Mouthfeel is full, way thicker than I would expect, and decent carbonation. I haven't had this beer in a long time, and it exceeded my recollections. It's super-roasty which is this beer's calling card. There is sweetness and bitterness too that gives some complexity, but nothing over-the-top. I need to buy more.

A: Black liquid with a 1 finger head. The head is tan in color and has irregular and larger bubbles. The head did not last too long and thinned out to a film

S: Chocolate and malts.

T: A bit of a bitter start - like bitter chocolate. After that roasted malt flavor and not much else. As it warms there is a bit of sweet to the finish - which is nice.

M: Nice smooth feeling with a slight edge of carbonation. Well balanced and good overall feel.

O: This is just okay. Nothing sticks out to make it worth repeating. I bought several Dark Horse stouts at the same time and so far none of them have been noteworthy.
