Number one in a series of five stouts produced to help ease you through the cold and grey Midwestern winters. This beer is full bodied with hints of chocolate, roasted barley, coffee flavors and a nice creamy head.

Ordered this on draft at Jerry's on Division in Chicago. They have such a great tap list it was hard to settle on this but I had seen the bottles at the stores and have been wanting to pick up a four pack. The label is so simple and yet very interesting.
It pours a dark black with a small creamy brown that quickly recedes and moves to the edges. Decent lacing on the glass. This is odd but there is almost no smell, maybe some roasted malts but there is almost nothing there. The flavor makes up for what the smell is missing. There is a nice bite to it and it's just right for the cold day I was drinking it on. It was served very cold but warms you up great. It is sweet but more of a roasted sweet than chocolate sweet. The 8% abv is there but is well masked by the flavors of vanilla and coffee. The flavors just dance in you mouth and the finish just leaves you wanting more. By the look of this beer you would think it would be a sipper but it's surprisingly drinkable. I was waiting for a take away order and this was pretty much gone after 10 - 15 mins.

Bottled 10/2014 (date obscured); drank 12/12/14 @ the Yarchives.
Black/brown hue.
Dark khaki head; strong lace.
Oats, cream & coffee nose; a hint of raspberry.
Medium thick, creamy mouthfeel.
Fresh earth, oats & cream flavors up front; bitter chocolate & faint hops on the finish.
A touch too bitter, but more flavorful than most oatmeal stouts. Good.

Somebody, anybody, tell me these Dark Horse brews will get better. Or at least they will taste like what is described on label...
I've had three different brews form Dark Horse, the first ever was pretty good, but the last two (which includes this one) is less than desirable. Though the darn thing looks good that's about all I can say. The smell is anything but oatmeal, the taste has some funky, metallic twang that just doesn't do it for me. I will say the mouthfeel is good as it is lightly carbonated, just the way I like 'em. Unfortunately, for the rest of this brew I am looking for a family member to pawn the other two I still have off.

L: Jet black color, quarter finger brown head, ok lacing, no visible carbonationn
S: Chocolate, coffee. Smells wonderful. Could sniff this all day long.
T: Chocolate, roasted coffee, raisins. Tastes nice.
F: Surprisingly light bodied but mouthfeel is ok.
O: Good beer but wish mouthfeel was more dense. That would make it great.

12 oz bottle with minimal sediment on the bottom. Pours near black with a thin , weak head.
Very appealing aroma with a flavor to match, almost. Both have exceptional balance. Remarkably well hidden alcohol, although it is evident in the flavor where it makes a positive contribution. Strong roasted grain aftertaste.
Very smooth, full body.
Overall: Nothing exotic here; just an admirably tasty and well-crafted oatmeal stout.

LOOK: Thick oily Dark black, small tan head.
AROMA: roasty, smokey malt. Very aromatic
TASTE: smoke, peat, coffee, toast, tobacco. A perfectly bitter finish, not too much, just enough to bring the flavor.
Feel: thick, smooth, a little creamy.
This is a very good oatmeal stout. Probably the best I've had, although Samuel Smith is always the sentimental benchmark.
