Massive thanks to my cousin Sonny for allowing me to try this beer!

A- Poured to a tulip, snifter and a pint glass with a pitch black body. A small, pretty much tiny head forms to just a sheet on the beer and recedes pretty quickly. Small, frothy ring leaves some nice legs but only a few spots of lace.

S- Deep cocoa and Bourbon pretty much rule the aroma with a decadent fudgey feel. Vanilla comes into play from the oak and melds with a somewhat sweet quality coming out. Chocolate chips.

T- Bourbon vanilla brownie is what comes to mind to me. Decadent fudge and cocoa provide a base for the barrels to come alive. Top quality whiskey feel as far as a beer goes with a fresh toasted oak and some vanilla. Deep semi-burnt roast grains, toast and ash.

MF- Thick bodied with a somewhat creamy and chewy feel. Carbonation is moderate to low but lets those flavors truly shine, especially from the barrels. Fairly warming from the ABV with some dark roast bitters in the finish.

Bourbon fudge brownies with a twist of vanilla from the oak. Deep and decadent with a great base of cocoa and roasted malts. The Bourbon flavor in this beer is quite possibly the best I have found. I feel like I am sipping a great shot of whiskey without the heat and ice/water.

Big thanks to BA Dan for getting me this. Pretty sure this is a 2012 bottle. Appearance is dark dark black with a little caramel head. Nose is huge, bourbony, with a slight offputting sourness. Taste is sweet up front, a little roasty, with some bitterness. Nice lasting bourbony finish. Mouthfeel is pretty full. Overall it's above average for a BBA stout. Sourness notwithstanding, it's a nice piece de resistance to Dark Horse's stout series.

2012 12 oz poured into a sniffer on 4.29.2014.

A: Opaque with small tan head. Okay legs. Similar to BCBS. 4.50
S: Honestly? Not exactly pleasant. Kinda smells like fish food. 3.00
T: Kinda off... bitter and astringent as bourbon barrel barrel stouts go. 3.50
M: Nothing special. Kinda unpleasant aftertaste... like coffee-breath. 3.00

I think this bottle may have oxidized.

Poured from 12 oz. waxed bottle into Teku glass. Beer was stored in cellar at 50 degrees and I have been looking forward to trying this one out for a long time. The past week in the PNW has been hot and sunny, today it’s been pouring and the temperature has dropped to the 50s, perfect setting to enjoy this brew.

The appearance is viscous and obscure, blackberry in color – motor oil would be an appropriate descriptor as well. Almost no head was formed, even after the last portion of the pour was done at 90 degrees into the glass. The little head that briefly formed was mocha in color and quickly dissipated into the darkness of the liquid it covered, forming a thin ring that perfectly surrounds the glass. As I poured the beer its appealing aroma of vanilla and oaky bourbon escapes the confines of the glass, its scent is sensual and inviting. Faint traces of coconut, dark chocolate, licorice and cinnamon linger after the vanilla and the bourbon are absorbed. Upon tasting the beer, you feel it’s silky creamy body touch your tongue and make its way towards your palate. The first feeling you get is a slight burn from the alcohol immediately followed by a balanced invasion of vanilla extract and toasty oak. As the beer dances further in your mouth, dark chocolate and cinnamon make a cameo appearance, albeit short. The aftertaste leaves you with a French roast coffee flavor beneath its aforementioned dominating flavors. Carbonation is very mild, which in my opinion bodes well with its flavors and allow them to take center stage.

Overall – this is an excellent beer that will make it to my permanent ISO list. So rich, well balanced, and easily enjoyable. I also love the fact that such a great BBA Stout is available in a 12oz presentation. In my opinion this tastes & smells like a distant relative to Parabola.
