Reviewed from notes.

Pours a medium copper color with a very thin off-white head and a spot or two of lacing on the edges of the glass. The nose brings a prominent whiskey character forward, and this then eventually gives way to a light citrus sourness. This is a better example of a whiskey sour than the beer from Short's by that name was. Mili cherry and some oak as well. The flavor isn't quite as reminiscent of an 18-year-old's favorite mixed drink, but it's still pretty enjoyable. Finish has a bit of whiskey burn from a sourness that goes well with it. Original and interesting; highly enjoyable. Perhaps more so than the bottled version seems to be.

A: The pour is a slightly hazed golden orange color with a rather small amount of white foam which quickly fades to a few bubbles around the edge of the glass.

S: Smells quite nice. Tart fruits, specifically lemon and peach, perhaps some white grape. Lots of vanilla and whiskey, and a pronounced charred oak aroma. Lightly lactic and acidic with a definite caramel malt character.

T: Starts out sweet and malty with a substantial whiskey flavor. As the beer warms up, it really improves. A solid lemon tartness along with some white grapes and peach. Charred oak and vanilla from the barrel work nicely with the rest of the flavors.

M: Medium in body with a rather low carbonation. The minimal carbonation doesn't really take away too much.

O: At the first sip, I thought this had too much whiskey, but it really was a good beer and I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Thanks to Scott for contributing this beer on Saturday. Served in a tasting snifter.

A - Pours with a thin film of bubbles that settles to a thin ring. Hazed orange-brown color.

S - Sharp oak, sour acetic notes, tart apples, vanilla, light booze and whiskey, and a faint hint of plastic.

T - Pretty oak heavy, and not as sour as the nose. There's still a good amount of malt character. Finishes with sour barrel and tannic characteristics.

M - Almost no carbonation. Slightly gritty medium body that finishes dry. Not much heat on this one thankfully.

D - This was pretty mediocre compared to the other amazing beers that we had at the tasting. It's a decent first attempt for Dark Horse, and some fruit and carbonation might make it better.

Bottle opened by Carlos, thanks! Poured into a snifter. 

A: Honey orange with good clarity and a white head. Nice color.

S: Strong caramel notes with a little toffee. Whisky is evident but not in your face. Moderately acetic with a lot of acetone, think nail polish remover. There's some apricot and apple.

T: Lots of nail polish remover and a burning acetic acidity. Some apple and caramel with a little whiskey and oak. Burning vinegar finish.

M: Smooth and sticky with low carbonation and a light body.

Overall: I was glad to try this, but wouldn't recommend it. Not a well made sour.

Bottle 220 of 395. Batch 3205-7

A: Pours a nice clear ruby. Appears to be flat or close to it, no real head or lacing at all.

S: Hmph, is this a barrel aged sour? Interesting. Lots of sour fruits, vinegar and acetone. But there's some sweet caramel and toffee mixed in. So sour it stings the nose.

T: Whoa. Some nice caramel, brown sugar and toffee but mostly it is annihilated by a huge wave of sour fruit. Tart cherries I think. Some vanilla in the finish. Instantly it's giving me heartburn.

M: Flat, medium bodied and smooth however.

O: Super sour, loaded with vinegar and acetone to the gills. You can tell this beer had potential but the sour aspects just destroy any semblance of flavor. Having said that, this is easily the best dark horse sour I've had so far. Not that that is saying much. Mostly they are all like drinking nail polish remover.

Poured from 750ml bottle. Thanks go out to semibaked for hooking me up with this bottle!

A- Poured a hazed golden yellow/orange color. Two finger white head shows medium retention. Nice web style lacing left on the glass.

S- This has an interesting aroma to me. Upon first sniff I got a ton of watered down whiskey aroma with some light funk and barrel notes. Letting this sit for a second I came back to this. The watery whiskey still came out first but right behind this there was a musty oak note. Light funk comes after this that gives way to a caramel malt base and green apple notes. Citrus sourness on the ending with a light latic acidic ending. I think this smells wonderful while I think betsona and gratefulbeerhead weren't sure of it at first.

T- The front starts off with some caramel malts with lightly watered down whiskey. The barrel notes come out more in the middle here with light vanilla and actual straight oak wood note. This is counterbalanced by a light lingering sourness that is never gets over the top. The ending of the beer starts with the caramel malts blending with a light green apple note. Toward the back there is a nice white grape and lemon citrus flavor. The sourness starts to become its own in the ending but never gets to pucker status. There is a light whiskey undertone in the ending as well that helps move the sourness along. Alcohol is never an issue as it seems pretty clean to me.

M- Medium mouthfeel. Carbonation is good for the beer (although light for the style) I thought without being too light. Whiskey and soured lemon rinds are left on the palate. Aftertaste is mostly light whiskey, soured lemon notes, and hints of what seems like green apple. Flavors I thought were broken into two sections (whiskey and lemon sourness) but blended overall very well. No off flavors were detected while I was drinking this one. Light alcohol drying on the palate with each sip.

O- Overall this beer drank like a whiskey sour almost perfect which is what I thought it was going to be. Dark Horse has made some very good beers in the past and I think this one really belongs with those as well. The ABV never really showed while I was drinking which wasn't a bad thing. I would love to see them try their hand on more of these things as from this offering it shows they can do it.

2012 vintage, Bottle #28 of 395, Batch #3205-7. 750 ml C+C bottle into a tulip. The cork was a huge struggle to get out. I had to use vice grips and a corkscrew, it still took ten minutes...

A - Pours a slightly hazy dark golden body, its quite pretty actually. No head to speak of, just some small bubbles around the edge and thin lacing.

S - Huge bourbon presence. Vanilla, toffee, butterscotch, and charred oak. A bit of sour cherries on the finish. Smell is pretty amazing if your a fan of whiskey and Flemish browns/reds.

T - Starts off with some light cherries, vanilla, and oak. Very thin tasting.The taste is decent until a huge wave of vinegar and acid washes over. A quick and unpleasant taste of paint thinner and then a finish of oak and booze. Its not bad per se, its just not great. The biggest issue is the insane level of acidity that accompanies the light flavors.

M - No surprise here, its dead flat. Not a huge issue for me (I enjoy unblended lambics and flat stouts...) but to some this may be an issue. A bit of spritz would help out immensely but the beer does work as a flat one IMO. Heartburn is the biggest issue here.

O - Not as bad I as was expecting. I'd even go so far as to say I like it despite its short comings. Its flat, super acidic, and lacking in complexity. However the aroma is a like a light bodied barrel aged oud bruin and the little flavor it has before being interrupted by volcanic vinegar is kind of nice. Decent for sure.
