An imperial stout at heart, with sourness that is bretty in the finish. Roast aroma. Very undercarbonated, despite a cork that took Shwartzneiger work to remove. Very dark brown without a head. Middling and smooth mouthfeel.Liam’s bottle, thanks for sharing.

Bottle from buzze40, 750ml into a tulip. Batch 32057, bottle 156 of 304. Insanely tough cork to remove.

Black with a light tan head, without any lace or retention. Nose of black cherries, chocolate, some roast, light oak and general berry aromas. Taste has roast, dark fruits, a mild sourness, tart berries and dark chocolate. Light body for the style, and perhaps on the flatter side of things in terms of carbonation. Regardless, this has disguised the alcohol substantially and was still pretty decent.

Thanks to TurdFurgison for opening this bottle at the post-Christmas Chicago tasting. Served in a Cantillon tulip.

Pours a pretty dark brown with a minimal amount of light foam on the top of the beer without too much else there. The nose is pretty good. There really isn't all that much sourness. I would think this has to have been accidentally infected, as I was curious about the concept to begin with and this doesn't seem like it was intentionally soured. Who knows. Some chocolate and roast there as well as a bit of woody character.

The taste again shows no sourness but does have a good dose of wood and chocolate. Very nice roast there as well. The mouthfeel is pretty good. It is somewhat thick and the barrel character works well. Pretty drinkable, though. Interesting, but I still don't really see the point of this one.

Big thanks to TurdFurgison for sharing this one at a tasting in Chicago.

A - Dark brown beer that get close to black when it's out of the light. Little bit of tan head, nothing really left on the sides.

S - Vanilla, roast, some chocolate, there's really not a ton of sour on this one. honestly not sure exctly where they were going with this one as sour doesn't seem present.

T - Some butter, roast, vanilla, there's a bit of bourbon. Just a slight bit o wood with some caramel, still not really getting any of the sour on this, but as far as a barrel aged stout goes it's solid.

M - Full bodied, lower carbonation, very smooth.

O - Decent barrel aged RIS, but it's not fantastic and it's not sour. Decent beer, but somewhat confusing.

tried this beer this on saturday nite with some friends! Thanks for bringing it out Jeff!

reviewed from notes.

Appearance: black bodied beer with an almost nonexistant head.

Smell: bourbon and chocolates. Maybe some subtle sour smell here.

Taste: Bourbon sweetness and big impy stout flavors of coffee, vanilla, and chocolate. Midtaste you get a mild to moderate sour taste that actually works well with in this big stout. Finish is still a bit sour and no booze is in the finish.

Mouthfeel: high end of medium bodied beer with low carbonation. This beer has a really slick and oily feel to it.

Overall: This is a really interesting beer. Really breaks the mold of how beer can taste. Great creativity by Dark Horse on this beer! Its interesting how a beer can be both sweet and sour at the same time!

Thanks for this bottle, Derek.

Pours nearly black in color with a small khaki head. Starts off with fairly regular stout aromas such as roasted malt, coffee, and some vanilla from the oak. The vinegar and sourness come through toward the back end. It also has an interesting grass aroma. Tastes a bit more sour than it smells, but still lots of roasted malt and a hint of coffee. The oak flavor is there and provides a slightly drying tannic feel to the beer. A decent amount of vinegar, but not overly acetic. There is even a touch of fruit on the palate.
