On tap at the Tap and Mallet in Rochester, NY.

Pours a dark glossy black with absolutely no head or lacing. Kind of disappointing.

Smells slightly cloying, with some vanilla beat, sarsaparilla (root beer) and sugar.

This one doesn't feel like a stout, where the BA version did, which is weird. Tons of artificial root beer flavor, along with some fake, slightly cloying vanilla flavor. Not much else going on, feels like more like alcoholic root beer than an actual root beer stout. Disappointing.

Thin bodied, way too thin for a stout. Slightly watery. Not all that drinkable due to the cloying nature of this one. Low carbonation.

It's incredible how disappointing this one was versus the bourbon barrel-aged version. Night and day here.

On tap at the brewery.

A: Pours black with a huge dark brown head.

S: Big vanilla and sarsaparilla. Some underlying malt.

T: Lots of vanilla and rootbeeriness upfront that is slightly sweet. There is some bitter cocoa and coffee in the middle. Finish is chocolate.

M: Thickbody with good carbonation.

O: I really like this beer, but I love rootbeer.

This is my first BA review. Hip-hip hooray! I feel obligated to post because of the paucity of reviews for this unique brew. Drove from the 'burbs down to City Provisions just to try it. (Had a yummy Italian sandwich after making my beer notes.)

No head on this beer. Quite black, shades of brown around the edges. There's a definite vanilla aroma that's immediately apparent, and is quite nice. Taking a sip... sweet up front. A bit tangy in the middle. Aftertaste is primarily roasty with the vanilla staying around. It's definitely a stout first, and the vanilla adds a nice sweetness. Body is medium-light. Toward the end of the pint, noticing a bit of sugar stickiness. Think I'll stop at one pint.

I recently had DH's Tres Blueberry Stout and was very impressed with it. This isn't quite at that level: body a bit too light and a little too sugar-sticky. But I still like it, and won't turn down a pint in the future, given the opportunity.
