Served in a Dark Horse pint, on tap at City Provisions.

Initially it had a fleeting head of dark chocolate stained mocha foam, but it quickly fizzled away, leaving zero foam whatsoever. No matter how much it was swirled, no foam. Black body, dark brown edges.

Vanilla aroma, some light roast, medicinal notes of straight vanilla extract, and some earthy spice.

Flavor was similarly roasty with phenolic spice that reminded me again of vanilla extract. Sarsaparilla was likely the key component lending medicinal notes. Stout base was fairly roasty, some light bitterness to it. Body became slightly watery over time, not as creamy as the standard lineup of DH stouts. Lingering spice notes from the sarsaparilla addition. It's alright, but not fully melded it seemed. It was missing something, though the "root beer float" concept was a creative attempt.

On tap at the Tap and Mallet in Rochester, NY.

Pours a dark glossy black with absolutely no head or lacing. Kind of disappointing.

Smells slightly cloying, with some vanilla beat, sarsaparilla (root beer) and sugar.

This one doesn't feel like a stout, where the BA version did, which is weird. Tons of artificial root beer flavor, along with some fake, slightly cloying vanilla flavor. Not much else going on, feels like more like alcoholic root beer than an actual root beer stout. Disappointing.

Thin bodied, way too thin for a stout. Slightly watery. Not all that drinkable due to the cloying nature of this one. Low carbonation.

It's incredible how disappointing this one was versus the bourbon barrel-aged version. Night and day here.

On tap at the brewery.

A: Pours black with a huge dark brown head.

S: Big vanilla and sarsaparilla. Some underlying malt.

T: Lots of vanilla and rootbeeriness upfront that is slightly sweet. There is some bitter cocoa and coffee in the middle. Finish is chocolate.

M: Thickbody with good carbonation.

O: I really like this beer, but I love rootbeer.
