Number four in our stout series, this beer is brewed with all malted barley and hardwood smoked malt. Aromas of smoked chocolate and coffee leave way to a full-bodied stout with a smokey finish. Fore is a house favorite among our brewers.

May 2013: 355 ml bottle, kindly shared by our beerpal Ole Anders. Pitch black colour, minimal tan head. Unusual smokey aroma, notes of sour tobacco pipe, dry salted bacon, wood, ashes and peat. Dry flavour, woody and moderately smoked and roasted flavour, hints of liquorice. Unusual and interesting.

Taste: smoked bacon, malty, molasses, tobacco, woody, sticky mouthfeel. Same with the nose. Black, opaque, with a tan delicate head and lace. Full body. would pair well with with BBQ.

2017 bottle to snifter.
LOOK: dark black, very little head or any other characteristics.
AROMA: obviously smokey, peat, coffee. Could stand to be a bit stronger.
TASTE: Wood, charred malt. Leather.
FEEL: Abnormally smooth sipping for the style. Full body.
Good, but a tad disappointed. I thought 3 years would have coalesced into some stronger flavor and aroma.

Bottled 1/5/15; drank 2/22/15 @ the Yarchives.
Black appearance. Small dark khaki head; decent lace.
Oatmeal, cream & mild smoke notes in the nose.
Oatmeal & mild smoke flavors up front; mild pickle finish.
Cream notes emerged as this warmed. Not too smoky.
An odd mix; not very enjoyable.

Onyx black pour, underneath a dense tan head, this hefty stout has dark chocolate, coffee, and stone fruit aromas. I get zero smoke on the nose.
The smoke jumps in head first on the taste though, adding texture and flavor to the dark chocolate and coffee flavors. This is exceptionally well done, IMHO.

I had such high hopes for this brewer, so far not a one of the 12-pack I have like. But this one is probably the best I have had so far (but sadly, it really doesn't say much...)
I love smoked food and I am a stout aficionado - this would bring those two worlds together - what a great concept. Unfortunately, this beer falls short of what my expectations were going in - a strong, malty, smoky background - of which none existed. Instead, what I found was another coffee flavored, malt beverage that smelled much of the same and was just another less than stellar offering from the 12-pack I am slowly slogging through.
I will mention though that this beer has an almost perfectly black coloration even though there is no foam formation to be found. Mouthfeel was smooth and lightly carbonated, with a tacky after effect on the tongue. So far, I'm finding the offerings from this Dark Horse variety pack to be very similar and lacking any distinctive qualities from style-to-style.

12oz bottle; '9.22.17' on bottle neck (6 months old)
Look: Pours pitch black and sits pitch black in the glass, with a nice chocolate-colored head (tiny bubbles) that dissipates somewhat quickly; reasonably nice legs.
Smell: Mild, but what I expect in a quality stout: roasted malts and chocolaty.
Taste: generous amounts of malts & chocolate, with a hint of smoke on the finish.
Mouthfeel: creamy and on the heavy side; just what I want in a stout.
With only 7% ABV, this beer is quite impressive. I am looking forward to having the next one.

Has a really nice smoke finish that's not overwhelming. And a smokey mouthfeel. Well balanced stout.
