Bottle pour at mrbubbler's tasting.

Pours a murky dark orange with a foamy khaki head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, brown sugar, dark fruit, citrus zest, and alcohol aromas. Taste is much the same with cocoa and brown sugar flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roasty bitterness and an alcohol kick on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and sticky mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is tasty but the bourbon barrel aged variant is much better in my opinion.

On tap, Michigan Summer Beerfest 2013. Couldn't pass up on this one, as I have no idea when I'd be able to cross paths with it again. Deep, murky brown, nearly black, and completely muddled and opaque. The tan head is slow to rise, and keeps forming even after I've been handed the glass. It's comprised of thin, micro-bubbles and lasts for the entire glass, leaving a few spots of lacing as the beer empties.

What an immensely powerful and potent aroma! But what else should you expect from a 17.5% ABV barleywine? Malty like a mofo; plentiful bouts of sticky sweet caramel, warm booze, sweet dark fruits like figs, prunes, and juicy raisins, molasses and some more brown sugar. Anything you can think of that has sugar in it, just toss it in there. The bottom line is: this bitch is gon' be sweet as hell, no doubt about it.

And yeah, no surprise that as I take the first sip, I can literally hear my dentist hootin' and hollerin'. He knows that now he'll be able to afford those jet-skis, all because Anthony had some Monster 29. Sweet molasses, melted and slightly burnt brown sugar, syrupy sweet and just oozing with sugary goodness from every molecule and every atom. Dark fruits, and even a bit of cocoa nibs and a light dash of cocoa powder; some sort of chocolate, anyway.

The heavy maltiness and touch of vanilla-esque and brown sugar-y notes create an interesting and tasty creme brulee-like finish. Despite the sickening sweetness of this beer, it wasn't hard to finish, and was actually damn tasty - though a 4 oz pour is pretty much perfect. Any more than that might be a challenge. Even with the sticky nature of the beer, the mouth feel is surprisingly creamy and silky and smooth; heavy and huge with low carbonation.

Wow, this was a really good and really enjoyable beer. I'm not the biggest fan of barleywines out there, but there's been quite a few that I've enjoyed recently, and this one is pretty damn tasty. It's certainly a beer you wanna have in small doses, as it can easily get cloying and overly-sweet. A few ounces of this followed by a three-hour nap sounds like a good Saturday night to me.
