Appearance: A finger of crisp white head on the pour. Dark burnt orange color. Active carbonation is a touch on the lower side but still fits. Sticky lacing left behind at each level.

Smell: Fresh pine hits first. Potent medium bodied fruity hop lives on the body. Caramelized malts provide a great backbone and are on the sweeter side. Simple and straight forward.

Taste: Bright fruits hit on the palate immediately. That quickly yields to a sweet malt profile with accents of caramel and oak. Earthy pine shows up and stands out underneath the malt profile. Lingering pine with medium bodied sweetness stands on the palate.

Mouthfeel: Sweet malts and balanced hop bitterness do well together on the palate. Carbonation is fitting.

Overall: Really impressed with all three of the single hopped beers in this Dark Horse twelve pack this year. Apollo was probably my favorite, but all three were complex and great examples of single hopped IPAs. Well done Dark Horse.

12oz bottle poured into a tulip. Pours a hazy copper with some sediment floating; small off-white head that leaves nice retention and solid lacing. The aromas seem to be malt forward. Lots of dark fruits along with subtle hints of citrus. It actually smells like a barleywine, but on a smaller level. Raisins and orange seem to shine. Caramel is definitely in the mix. The aromas seem to carry on to the flavors. Lots of orange zest along with hints of lime. Some grapefruit. More caramel malts. Some raisins and figs are there. Very subtle hints of pine resin. The hops do their thing, but seem to get cut down by the malts. Alcohol goes unnoticed. Mouthfeel is nice. It's medium-bodied with active carbonaton. It's smooth and creamy; it ultimately goes down pretty smooth.

So I guess I wasn't nuts about the IPA variety pack, but I appreciate Dark Horse sticking with traditional examples of the style and not going for the sexy west-coast style. That being said, this is well crafted, but ultimately forgettable for me. I probably liked this one the least out of the three.

Best mixer 12pack I've straight up ever had. so legit. not a couple good ones and a couple bad ones. but 4 legit beers all with a 6.5abv. This was one of my favorite of the 4. the cascade hops are off the chain. dark horse makes the most delicious, pure beer round michigan. founders and bell's can blow me.
