On tap in the VIP room at the brewery.

Aroma: very appealing and nicely complex. Some dark fruits and toffee.

Taste: rich and complex; slightly sweet; hint of oak barrel aging. Lightly and appealingly boozy (otherwise high ABV is fairly well hidden).

M - Fairly full body; medium-low, soft carbonation.

O - Superb:rich and complex yet easy to drink.

Serving type: on-tap

Bottle 573 of 666

A: A murky reddish-brown pour. Small fluffy off-white head despite aggressive pour. Despite this, it leaves little splotches of lacing with excellent head retention.

S: Huh, I did not realize this was barrel aged. Notable bourbon with caramel, brown sugar, vanilla and some dark fruits like raisin and fig. Not much else is detectable at this point. Just sweet and malty.

T: Barrel influence is less here but still notable. Caramel and brown sugar mainly. Very sweet, sticky and malty in general. There is some heavy grainy malt character, like dark bread and oatmeal. Decent bit of vanilla and then oak in the finish, making it a touch dry.

M: Quite heavy, thick and borderline syrupy. All malt.

O: Very interesting beer. Only thing I know about it is that the bottle says it's a "potable oat wine". It's very malty, heavy on the breadiness, graininess and sweetness. Appears to be barrel aged to some extent - more noticeable in the aroma. In the taste it integrates well with the existing flavors I'd say. Having said all of that, it's quite tasty. Similar to a barleywine but with less fruitiness and more graininess/breadiness. That's the best comparison I can give. Like drinking liquid dark bread basically.

750ml bottle, #209/666, shared by Marco. Thanks!

A: Pours a murky amber with a small off white head.

S: Very fruity nose. Notes of orange and raspberry jam, tannic caramel and light oak, old hop spice.

T. Caramel, cherry, light hop bitterness and a bit of orange peel, tannic vanilla, mild butterscotch.

M. Medium-bodied with light carbonation.

O: Pretty unique for an American barleywine. It's a bit fruitier than most, with less bitterness, and the barrel-aging certainly complements the base beer. Very enjoyable.

Note: I don't know why this is listed as 8% ABV, but it's definitely stronger than that.

This was one that I tried at 4 Elf '12 and remembered to be good when buying my bottles. 75cl poured into a HF tulip at cellar temp. Well, after of course the cork broke and I had to dig it out. Corks are too soft, beware.

A - Translucent red/orange/mahogany. White head becomes nice, full lacing. Doesn't stick well to the glass, but otherwise beautiful.

S - Fresh dark fruits, plums, grapes, small amount of cherry, toffee.

T - Soft caramel, grains, candied plums, woody heat. The grainy/woody heat remains in the finish.

M - Medium body, a little lighter than I'd expect.

O - The flavor is a little underwhelming in the first sip, but it grows a bit. I actually like it and find it easy to drink. I don't know the ABV%, but I'm guessing somewhere around 10%.

Thanks Thomas for sharing! Quick review from notes.

Cloudy brownish amber color with a thin layer of surface skim, and a thin spotty collar around the edges.

Lots of sweet toffee and butterscotch in the aroma. A little whiff of booze as well, but not distracting.

Flavor is a different story, the alcohol is pretty overt, slightly fusel and sharp like whiskey. Some fruity esters of dark fruit, plum, as well as a big caramel, toffee, butterscotch presence from the big malt content and whiskey barrel. The booze eclipses any complexity, but the taste is pretty good. Would be hard to tackle a bottle alone, definitely best shared and worth a try in small doses.
