Visited on 11/28/08 during a beer jaunt to Michigan, MI with fellow BAs brewslut, Deuane and SierraGS.
Dark Horse Brewing Company is more like a complex rather than just a brewpub. There is an adjoining bottle shop/convenience store where you can pick up Dark Horse bottles as well as selections from many other breweries. There is also a seperate "General Store" that peddles Dark Horse merch, including some great T-shirts and work shirts (a la Troegs).
But the centerpiece is undoubtedly the brewpub itself. This place absolutely reeks of character. While the interior is pretty beat up, this is exactly the kind of place I like to kick back and enjoy a fresh brew. The walls and ceilings are adorned with a vast amount of painted and decorated mugs for their numerous mug club members. I think just about everyone in Marshall, MI must be a mug club member, because this place is seriously littered with mugs! There are also some interesting photos of locals on the walls that are fun (and occasionally disturbing). All in all, it's a very hodge podge affair, but at the same time, comfortable and inviting.
Service was fine... nothing amazing but not lacking either. We had two different servers, though. While we didn't have a regular meal, we did order the pretzels and cheese, which was essentially cheeze whiz and some mini pretzels. I expected a bit more for a brewpub (order a pretzel at Selin's Grove to see what I mean).
Now, on to the beer. During this visit, I had two beers: Crooked Tree IPA and Perkulator Coffee Dopplebock. Both were excellent, with the Perkulator being one of my top beers of my entire trip. They had around twelve taps (or more), if I remember correctly, and the selection included something for every taste. Everyone at my table enjoyed the beer very much. I certainly could have hung out here all day, because the beer was fresh and the prices were reasonable.
All in all, this is an awesome brewpub with a unique charm and tons of character. This place is definitely a must-visit if you find yourself in or around Marshall, MI. I already can't wait for a return visit!
