This stout nears black, a deep and heavy color. It grows a tan head to half a finger or so. It holds up reasonably well and leaves moderate lace.
This beer showcases roast, bringing malts to the forefront but offering some hops for balance. It counters with a bit of sweetness before a nice woodiness comes into the middle and finishes it out along with an edge of char to the roasted grains that doesn't go to harsh. The flavor is a small improvement over the aroma only in that it comes out more strongly.
The firm body, resting on the strong side of medium, is definitely appropriate for this classically English style, and leans American in its strength without overdoing it. I'd like to see the oatmeal contribute more of a rolling, massively smooth creaminess, but it has a nice, soft flow even as it finishes roasty-dry.
