The 150th Anniversay Ale is a tribute to Toledo and the city's history of its love of strawberries as displayed in the annual strawberry festival.
The color is a light amber. As with most Maumee Bay offerings, while the brew is solid the appearance is doesn't really put up the show. The head is there in a filmy foam that stays the whole way and leaves just a little very thin lacing.
The smell is very much strawberries with a strong backing of grains. There's a firm wheat in there and hops are fairly light underneath but certainly detectable along with a light malt.
The taste follows suit. As expected from a fruit beer, this is no hop bomb, but it does actually have a respectable 30 IBU. The nice thing about Maumee Bay's new menu is that the back lists every beer currently on tap and is changed out punctually and it lists ABV and IBUs for each beer. This beer is actually pretty well-balanced as the grains and a light hops bitterness both linger on the palate, and a sweet light malt is detected.
The mouthfeel is crisp with a nippy carbonation at a nice level. Body is light, maybe just a little thin.
This is worth trying, but there's only a short time.
