I had this syrupy concoction as part of a flight at Columbus Brewing (since they only had two of their own on tap). It was an interesting diversion. My son hurried through it, finding it too big. I found it to be a pretty good - Goldilocks - barleywine.
This one is not harsh and almost seems light for the style. It had almost no fizz and an obviously boozy bouquet.
This is one of the better Maumee brews I've tried. If I found this in a bottle I would buy two and let one sit a while to see if it gets even better. Recommended, if you know what you are getting into.

Obtained from Maumee Bay brewpub at Oliver House in downtown Toledo. Poured from a growler into a North Coast tulip glass.
A - Cloudy, dark orange/amber, with extremely little head. Left no lacing on the glass.
S - Unmistakable scent of spice and apples with caramel. Plenty of booze on the nose as well.
T - Fantastic. Incredibly reminiscent of apple cider, right down to the slight apple tartness, with a mulled spice characteristic. Also, toffee, caramel, dark fruit, and the alcohol gives it a nice warming quality. What an awesome beer.
M - Matched well to the taste, a nice carbonation with a medium body. Does not coat the tongue.
O - This is an expensive growler to buy, but very well worth it. I have never tasted a beer like it, especially with the apple characteristic - interesting and delicious. Highly recommended.

Wow. A delicious barleywine. They are out of it now in Toledo (July 2012), but they'll have the Amarillo Brillo (DIPA) back in a few days! That is the bomb -- as Parliament/Funkadelic would say. Maumee Bay: you are a Toledo Gem. Thanks! We're almost in Michigan, so just consider us part of the Bell's, Founders, Dark Horse, Short's, Kuhnnehn's, Maumee Bay Triangle. Come for a visit, y'all. PS Alebird knows what he's talkin bout.

Maumee Bay's Brewed Witch is a stellar barleywine! I consider Sierra's Bigfoot a benchmark for barleywines and this beer comes in close to it. it's a little sweeter than bigfoot and not quite as "full" but nonetheless this is a fantastic example of the style.

Serendipidty struck on this one. Burger Bar 419, highly recommended in Toledo, Oh, had this on tap as of 1-25-12 and lucky me came in to taste it.
A-Tawny Cloudy Perfection. Poured by a lovely barmaid to a two-finger head. Head dissapated to 1mm ring with perfect lacing throughout.
S-Sharp Dark Cherry sweetness with caramel notes. Only had faint hop notes.
T-Wow nice sweetness up front followed by hoppiness. Sweet notes of dark cherry, followed by caramel with slight bite of hops at end
M-Copy this one as it has perfect creaminess when swished
O-Other than being warmer would open up flavor, great example of style
