Maumee Bay Brewing Company’s Total Eclipse Breakfast Stout is a hearty meal in a glass. As it pours, it devours the light and your glass is filled with darkness. This massive beer brewed with espresso beans (from Flying Rhino in Toledo, OH), oatmeal, and lactose offers a rich and complex taste that begs to be savored. With a smooth carbonation and luscious roasted malt flavor, you will fade to black as you slowly sip this finely crafted brew. We recommend serving at 45-50 degrees in your favorite snifter. It’s nothing but total bliss from Maumee Bay Brewing Co.

Got this on tap at the brewery... Kind of odd they poured it in a full pint glass and not a snifter as suggested.

Fantastic stout. Well balanced chocolate and coffee. Starts off a bit on the sweet side, but a balancing dark chocolate bitterness comes through on the finish. Mouthfeel is superb for the style. Thick and silky smooth throughout with low soft carbonation. Carries the flavors well. Espresso and creamy oats come through more as it warms. I'll definitely be buying more of this.

Appearance is brown-black with a tan head that fades and some nice lacing.

Nose is sweet lactose, with peanut brittle, black coffee, and fresh hops.

Taste is more bitter than sweet, with dark coffee and sweet milk, clove and buttered croissant.

Mouthfeel is easy, with mild carbonation and balanced alcohol. Warm finish.

Overall, this is not bad at all!

Nice coffee style stout... Has nice body and a nice robust flavor without being too bitter or off balance. I think the 9% ABV is pretty well hidden. Although some booze is presence. Lacks the all world creaminess and coffee profile of founders. Still def worth a grab of you see it~

This beer was great to look at and had a very nice nose. Unfortunately , it was bitter and acidic and tart in an unpleasant way - not an appealing way. Mouthfeel was then. Overall a decent beer but nothing that need be tried more than once.

Big. Dark. Big dark, big dark, big. Black coffee, toffee, roasted malts, nuts, dried fruit, vanilla, pumpernickel bread, and everything else an imperial stout should be.

Pours black in the glass with the perfect, thick, fluffy, almost marsmallow-y head foam.

This is a fierce brew. Tried more than my share of samples at the Columbus beer fest, and going to look for this in a bottle somewhere soon.

With FBS as, likely my #1 beer of all time, this one honestly ties it. i'd wager if you had them both back-to-back, you'd not differences, but it'd be a wash...seriously outstanding...

now if only they'd distribute to Dayton,

12 ounce bottle into snifter, no bottle dating. Pours dense pitch black color with a 1 finger dense dark tan head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Slight spotty lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, toast, toffee, raisin, plum, light vanilla, and yeast/roasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roasted malt, coffee, and dark fruit notes; with good strength. Taste of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, toast, toffee, dark bread, light dark fruit, light vanilla, light char, and roasted earthiness. Fair amount of roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, toast, toffee, dark bread, light char, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roasted malt and coffee flavors; with a great roasted bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very smooth, creamy, and lightly chalky mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent imperial coffee stout. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roasted malt and coffee flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

Look: Pours jet black. Finger of head with nice lacing. Medium brown head.

Smell: Coffee, dark fruit, chocolate, and maybe a little vanilla.

Taste: Very nice. Follows the nose. Roasted malts. Lots of coffee and dark fruit. Lactose sweetness. Some chocolate notes.

Feel: Creamy and smooth. Medium to full bodied. Very drinkable.

Overall: Excellent. I've had this numerous times on tap at the brew pub and from the bottle. Never disappoints. Definitely Maumee Bay's flagship beer.

Thanks to BobSacamano12 for this bottle…yes, it’s clearing out the back of the fridge week! No idea how this one got lost. It sounds good. 12 oz. bottle split with no one.

The pour is as expected: jet black, with enough carbonation to thwart my bubble-averse daughter. Nose is as underwhelming as Atlanta in August, with weak coffee & faintly sweet malts vying with, well, not much else. Meh.

Total Eclipse Breakfast Stout is like that Uncle everyone has: not scary, or offensive, but not an experience you want to repeat. Or perhaps even finish. Grainy roast dominates in a water-driven kind of way, with a light sweetness accompanied by the jarring twang of a hillbillies’ bango. And that aftertaste, that aftertaste is where this beer fails. Finish twists into bonfire ashes with a slice of dark fruit that’s just starting to over ripen. The beer I could stomach. The after effects are too much to handle.

Clearly there is something turning in this beer, & turning the wrong way. I’m not sure what it is, but I’ve never craved stone fruit roasted in hot ashes. My first drain-pour in quite some time.

S-chocolate, coffee, molasses, dark fruit, dark malt

T-dark roasted malt, dark chocolate, molasses, dark fruit, coffee

F-medium body with light carbonation, smooth

O-decent stout, but flavors just a little awkward together and a little on the sweet side, not in a class with FBS

This beer is so close to Founders Breakfast Stout. This is an exceptional beer and I wish there was a way to purchase it in PA. Pours a very think dark brown color with a very large head. The aroma of chocolate and coffee fills the room. The taste is very distinct and full of rich flavors.

I highly recommend this beer.

This is an incredible beer. Being as a live walking distance from Founders Brewery, I have had my fair share of Breakfast Stout. I was in Toledo on business and stopped in Maumee Bay Brewing and immediately the "breakfast stout" tag on this beer caught my eye. I hate to say it, but it's better than Founders. Incredible flavor. Heavy chocolate, chewy, with an almost caramel after taste. I left with a few four packs and it's just as good in bottles. Don't pass this up if you see it!

Pours pitch black with nice lacing. Dark chocolate dominates the aroma with hints of bitter coffee and some sweetness. The flavor is amazing, lots of complexity. There's an almost milk chocolate sweetness followed by sharp coffee, deeply roasted malt and some hops. The mouthfeel is full not overly heavy, making this dangerously drinkable. The 9.1% ABV does not really come through. This is an extremely tasty beer but may have more coffee than you'd think, so it might be good early in the day or in preparation for a late night. I had it with dinner and couldn't sleep later on.

Black as night with a creamy beige head. As it should, coffee dominates the aroma. Quite a bit of chocolate, as well. Whoa...one sip in and I am hooked. Texture as smooth as silk with just the right amount of coffee. It's there, but the chocolate, oats, and even vanilla come through. Hops add a pungent, welcome bitterness at the end. The 9.1% ABV is both surprising and sneaky. Only noticable as a pleasing warmth.

Poured into snifter; pure black with a thin dark brown head that fades into a thin ring of foam after a few seconds. Smell is sweet fermented fruit, raisins and bananas, booze, and dark roasted coffee. Taste starts with sweet chocolate and moves into dark espresso immediately. Alcohol isn't noticeable at all, which is surprising for 9%+. The aftertaste can be a bit iffy; it seems on some sips the fermented fruit flavors combine with the bitter espresso and end up tasting like an old pb&j sandwich, but only slightly and this doesn't happen every sip.
Overall this is a great coffee stout with a huge creamy mouthfeel, awesome.

served on tap at the brewpub in Toledo.
Black and opaque with a hint of dark brown at the edges. Head is dark tan, has somewhat weak retention and leaves spotty lacing.

Smells and tastes rather sweet, a tad too sweet in tasting, with a pronounced toffee component. Less dark roast malt flavor than expected, and less coffee flavor than expected for a beer "infused with expresso".

Medium-light body and carbonation. Smooth.

A: Nice black pour with a good sized and dense medium brown head. Head fades slowly with top notch retention. Huge solid walls of lacing left behind.

S: Rich roasted coffee beans. Wonderful aroma. Some chocolate to back it up.

T: Yup, delicious coffee beans up front. Sweet chocolate mingles nicely, giving it a great mocha flavor. Chocolate balances out the coffee bitterness perfectly, leading to almost no coffee bitterness, just the wonderful flavor. It's actually a little sweet overall in fact. Almost pure chocolate in the finish.

M: Medium-heavy body. Silky and smooth.

O: A little simple, pretty much pure coffee and chocolate. A little on the sweet side, but not overpoweringly so. Having said that, I'm biased, these are three of my favorite elements in a beer and they work together well. Delicious brew. Dare I say amazing. Just hits the spot.

2013 bottle

Appearance: Opaque, black thickness with a small tan head.

Smell: Coffee, rich chocolate, caramel, vanilla, dark fruit. Wow.

Taste: Matches up nicely with the smell. Coffee and chocolate at the front of the tongue, give way to the carmel/dark fruit middle. The end is nice bitter coffee and chocolate. This is definitely a little sweet, and it's a sweetness that's not cloying, which is great.

Mouthfeel: On the medium side with good carbonation, very drinkable.

Overall: Every so often I get an extra that pleasantly surprises me, and this is one of those beers. It's a nice blend of a lot of good elements that come together nicely. Not overly complex but very drinkable.

look: 4 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 4 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4.25

Appearance: It pours black in color with no light able to come through the darkness. It is topped with ½” of brown head that dissipates to a small puddle right in the middle of the glass.
Smell: Roasted aromas dominate the nose of this Ohio beer it has a bit of coffee aroma that comes in haphazardly every now and then.
Taste: The flavor of this beer follows right along side of the aroma with total domination by roasted flavors which I rather enjoy because the roasted tastes are not bitter in anyway so it makes for a tasty beer.
Mouthfeel: This is a easy drinking stout that is dominated by roasted and coffee notes but since it is not bitter is makes it easier drinking than a person would think out of most stouts and at 9.1% ABV it hides the alcohol very well.

Pours black with a thick mocha head that sticks around. Smell is not super strong but still nice, some roasted malt, coffee, faint chocolate and sweetness. Taste starts with the rich roasted malt, slightly sweet with a nice coffee backbone. The high ABV is noticeable mid sip, and it comes on strong. The aftertaste is slightly bitter with a malty finish. A medium mouthfeel, smooth, slightly acidic. A lower ABV and a thicker mouthfeel would put this over the top. Still a nice beer, good flavor, easy to enjoy.
