The brewery is in an old warehouse that is part of 3 restaurants. The wood-fired pizza is pretty good to eat, along with the appetizers (if they have them in stock). The quality of beer would not warrant my return for the pizza though. There are plenty of pizza bars in the area that serve on-craft brew that is pretty close to what you're going to get for beer selection.

What can I say...it was my idea to give it another try tonight...and it was not what we expected.
As of October 12, 2007, they have completely shut down the very large upstairs to the general public, which was the main dining area with a very nice bar and oodles of breweriana everywhere. We were told by the hostess that it is now only available for private banquets and parties.
They have reinvented the old Oliver's Pub on the 1st floor into the main eating area, which seats about 50-60 I would say (no barstools at the stripped down bar either). The Mutz bar in the basement section adjoining this area by a hallway is still a bar, not alot has changed there. It's kind of a dive. But now they have renamed the entire downstairs venue Mutz.
Menu has been cut back to the bare minimum and is kinda pricey for what you get. We ordered a cheese puffs appetizer, way overpriced for what you got. Almost everything is fried. The servers were attentive, and almost a little pushy about placing a food order.
Fortunately, the "Grand Reopening" weekend special was 6.50 pitchers, so we inhaled 2 of the cask IPAs...still an excellent value at 8.75/pitcher regularly vs. 3.50 per pint. The other beers are nothing to write home about.
Reflecting back to the way this place used to be when it first opened, it has really slipped. The beers used to be something really special and the food was once exceptional. It was nothing to have to wait a very long time for a table, even with multiple rooms upstairs and down. When the original head brewer left and the original head chef left, things began to change and not for the better.
Our opinion is they need a new business plan, a new menu and more aggressive marketing, as well as better beer. I don't see how they can downgrade it much more...when I think back to what it used to be, it is SO freaking SAD. NOTE: This is the only non-chain microbrewery left in the Toledo area.
We do feel the need to support it occasionally just for the cask IPA beer, no other reason...

First, the atmosphere at Maumee Bay is among the best anywhere. The "Toledo beer hall of fame" is upstairs by the bar, and the collection of breweriana from around the country is very impressive. As for the beer, it's usually hit-or-miss here. The Hefe changes from year to year (and lately not for the better); the Pale Ale is decent (although always served too cold); the Brown Ale is nice; the IPA has been pretty good lately. Also, the Blitzen (also hit-or-miss), when good, is one of the better winter warmers in the area. The service is almost always very good here (which is a highlight), but the food has gone downhill in recent years.

Stop # 336 on my world brewery/brewpub tour.
Visited in the late evening for dinner with a coworker who order what turned out to be a massively delicious piece of carrot cake as an appetizer. May have been the highlight of the visit.
Second attempt at visiting Maumee. The first time my beer buddy and I were denied on a Saturday afternoon which I thought was odd to be closed at a time like that.
It's located in a large historic brick building in a "quiet" part of downtown Toledo. Not much going on in the area but was quite busy on this Thursday night. Nice view of the vintage brewing gear and and plenty of breweriana to take in as part of the atmosphere.
Took a while to get my first round of samplers (as well as the carrot cake). Lots of bartenders but they all appeared to be chatting up patrons sitting at the bar.
Beers I went with...
Blood Orange Hefe (sounds better than it is)
Blitzen (leftover holiday ale with cinnamon on glass rim)
Rye 2 x IPA
Dry Irish Stout (best beer of the bunch)
Chocolate Cherry Porter (complete with cherry sprinkles)
The beers were mostly average and I'm still not sure how I feel about the cinnamon and sprinkles as special effects on my beer. Samples were $.75 and $1.00 which was nice.
We also split a pizza which was pretty good.

Walked in here last week at lunch, but I was there to drink since I work midnights, and I've been planning a trip here with my Toledo buddy for some time. The decor was very nice, with the brick and old beer paraphernalia throughout. Service was not bad, but was off a bit. Maybe they're not used to the lunch crowd that doesn't eat, but the ambiance behind the bar was tense and uneasy, and the locale seemed wrought with confusion...a party of businessmen waited for their friends outside the main area on the second floor, and there was no one else in there except the two of us, and we wanted to drink.
The wait staff was very polite and knowledgeable about the regular and seasonal offerings. We ordered a raspberry wheat and a saison that had won a recent contest. The saison was quite good, but the wheat was hard to finish. The prices were reasonable, and I bought an attractive pint glass with the heron on it. I enjoyed our trip here, and would like to try it again in the future in the evening hours, but I was not overly impressed.

Visited last Friday right at 4pm when they opened.
Atmosphere was impressive as I have never been here before. There are 2 floors: the 1st floor houses a restaurant and the 2nd floor houses 3 additional restaurants along with a bar/brewery that houses all the beer taps and brewianna.
We sat at the brewery/bar area. They had 6 beers on Tap along with a cask IPA. They had an Imperial Rasp Wheat, Oatmeal Stout, Pale Ale, Kolsch, Pale Ale and Saison. I had a sample or a pint of all of them. The Stout(pint) was too watery and thin and very sweet. The Pale Ale (pint) was OK, nothing special. The Kolcsh was spot on and something I could easily drink all night. The Imp Wheat was impressive(sample), though at 11% abv could only have 1. My favorite was the Saison. This was made with sugar and 7 different spices. I never have tasted quite a Saison like this and really thought it was unique. Service was bad to OK, especially since they were not busy at all.
I would definetely go back especially during happy hour with 2.50 pints.

maumee bay brewing company is located in the nice, touristy (if tourists ever came there) area of toledo. first let me say this town is an absolute pit of misery. this is a highlight, however, and adds some life to the downtown area here.
first, we went for food. the upstairs dining room is a bright, naturally-lit open space with 20 or so booths and 20 or so tables. the supposed 'view' does include a bridge and the bay, but mostly the oversized empty parking lot in the rear of the building. i had the 'spicy italian' wood-fired pizza.. it was good, not great (im a new haven native).. my sig. other had the "special", which was advertised as a seafood plate of scallops, lobster and some other nice seafood in a light garlic cream sauce. picture that in your head. yummy. well, when it arrived, the seafood was chopped to tiny bits and the sauce was thicker than sausage gravy. atrocious and a waste of (what probably wasn't) good seafood. i ordered a tripel after dinner.. came in an imperial pint, available in pitchers. 10.6%?!?!?!? i joked with the waitress about this and she got it, relaying the fact that the staff knows but they were never told to pour light and so thats how it is. service was good though.
the best part of this place is mutz, the attached lounge.. think it was mutz, or mugz, or something like that. right off of the dining room.. the best collection of brewerania i've ever seen in a bar.. vintage coasters, cans, bottles, growlers on display. even beer artifacts, including a bottle of the first beer ever brewed in toledo, found during the construction of the brewpub. nice high ceilings, comfortable couches.. not at all crowded.. pool table and small bar with lots of cool light-up signs behind it.
i would go here if i lived in town, will never detour again just to hit it up.

This is one of the nicest microbreweries/pubs I've ever been to. It takes residence in a pre-civil war era hotel among brick streets in view of the high level bridge and the Maumee river. The building itself is really gorgeous, and as close to original as you can probably get, original floors, ceilings and windows. The place is packed with Ohio brewerania and decorated very nicely. I didn't check out the downstrairs bar though so my experience is limited to the actual restaurant/bar.
The beer I've got to say is sort of run of the mill in terms of style and complexity yet still far above most places as it's fresh and very well made. The dubbel was particularly good as was the cask IPA. I'd like to see them branch out and really get more creative in their brewing, if they did I think that with the building they've got they'd really have something quite special.
The service was so-so, our waitress was not very friendly, in fact a bit "snobby" I'd almost go as far as to say, she got the job done alright, but the personal skills needed work. The bartender we dealt with after our meal though was much more friendly and approachable.
The food was quite uninspired, very plain and tiny portions and therefore overpriced. Maybe they just don't do lunch well as I've heard their dinner menu is quite good.
Overall this place is a nice place to spot by for a fresh pint and especially just to see the place, it's a very nice atmosphere. The beer as I said is good, but is a bit lacking in originality, with a little work I think this place could be a phenomenon.
