American Pale Ale (APA) |  5.79% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

An American standard, BBC APA is a full bodied and heavily hopped American Ale. It is copper in color and brewed with a blend of pale and crystal malts, balancing the citrus and pine flavors from large doses of American and English hops to create a very drinkable, hoppy ale. BBC APA is a hophead’s dream!

A: Love the semitransparent amber color and the lacing; hard not to score this a 5.0 on appearance

S: Obvious floral aroma reminiscent of hibiscus; some citrus notes present as well

T: Fairly strong flavor for a pale ale; first sip is good with the citrus coming through on the front palate followed by a sugary fruitiness; back palate has a very pronounced grapefruit-hop bitterness, even for a pale ale; it is worth noting that after a couple of sips the front/mid palates all but disappear shooting straight to the typical bitter pale ale finish

M: Acidity and carbonation come to mind, not bad; medium body becoming instantly foamy in mouth

D: Average smoothness for a pale ale, but I can't escape the thought that one beer is more than enough

Strengths:
Nearly flawless appearance in glass. Nice persistent hoppy bitterness on back palate.

Weaknesses:
Despite the strong initial flavor, midway through a glass this beer becomes one-dimensional; after one of these, I'm ready to move on to something else

Okay beer if you are faced with limited options, but better pale ales are readily available in stores

Poured from a bottle into a point glass. Appears a dark amber color with a small of white had. The grass sticks around fit a while, and leaves good lacing.

The nose is very sweet with lots of caramel. Not a lot of good going on here, but it doesn't smell bad. The taste is more balanced, with the malts playing up front, and the hops coming through, bringing some pine and bitterness. The finish is a little sweet, but still has balance.

The mouthfeel is on par for a pale ale, but maybe a little sticky for me. Overall, it's a pretty average brew, and nothing that blew me away.

A- Brown hue with a small amount of head, some lacing
S- I sense a malty/hop aroma
T- Up front hops that does not allow for many other tastes
M- good amount of carbonation, does not linger all that much.
O- Nice APA that was worth the price of 9 dollars.

Appearance: Beautiful medium brown color, good carbonation, nice white/tan head that's thick and has good retention and lacing.

Smell: Pine/floral hops

Taste: Very pine and floral with sweetness but not overpowering, not much else.

Mouthfeel: lacks carbonation

This is a good quality beer. The pine needle taste is a little too much for me, but the beer is much better than average.

If you like head....well this is for you. Huge almost root beer float like top on this one. Murky orange body with a lot of lively bubbles.

Spicy hops with a hint of citrus opens it. Followed by and mingled with a LOT of bready elements that adds a lot of grain elements. This is followed by a lot of sweet malt notes. I'm expecting a very english pale ale flavor.

This is a well balanced beer, a good bit of hop bitterness at the end but the beer is well balanced as it goes through. Bready grains mixed with a lot of floral citrus notes. These notes never pass the sweetness of the malt beyond a touch of hops at the end. The finish has a good bit of soapy flavors that I'm not digging.

Given the AMAZING head, the carbonation in the glass seems marginal at best.

This isn't my style of beer. The english elements are iffy to say the best. It isn't a great beer and I won't go back I have to say.

Poured into regular pint glass.

A - Poured hazy amber color with medium foamy head that slowly dissipated leaving moderate amount of lacing around the glass.

S - Mostly floral, citrus and hops.

T - Slightly malty start with grains coming through and a citrusy hoppy bitter finish.

M - Medium bodied with high carbonation.

O - Good APA that's smooth and refreshing. I would recommend it.

Bottled May 2011. Fantastic.
12oz->Young's Pint

A ~ Pours a nice burnt amber color with a perfectly carbonated
ivory head. GREAT lacing and SOLID retention. Settles into nice cap with little rings embedded within.

S ~ Pale malt and resin...bit of caramel & earth. Smells like a perfect pale with a good amount of hops.

T ~ Wow! American hops first off. Lots of clean grassy hop flavor. Pale malt mid-palette providing a nice fresh bread quality with a touch of caramel & honey. There's a bit of hop oil on the back of the throat. It's almost like 2 phases of hops. Grass->Sweet Malt->Resin/Citric.
There's a grapefruit juice quality of bitter on the finish.

M ~ A medium-light body with nice unobtrusive carbonation. Hoppy enough without killing the Pale Malt that literally makes a pale ale. Lots of hop oils going on.

D ~ I just really enjoyed this beer. At less than 6%, it is the perfect session pale for a hophead. Got a good kick to it. I would love to try it on tap.
My first great beer from Kentucky. Thanks Cresant

cheers.

Copper to orange in color with a nice centimeter of head.

Nice amounts of juicy fruit and citrus in the nose.

Medium mouthfeel with plenty of carbonation and a delicious burst of hops. Amarillo comes to mind. I really love the blend of light carame/biscuity malts to the fruity hops. Plenty of delicious hop resin and citrus just blend wonderfully.

Delicious APA and one that I don't pass up.

I should preface this review by saying that I received an old bottle. I am only going to post this review because I feel I need to review the beer in the condition I received it. I will be re-reviewing it when I get the chance to sample a fresh bottle.

Appearance - An orangish/amber/copper color with some yellow highlights around the bottoms and sides. It's hazy with an off white colored head that was kind of small and didn't leave much lacing or have much retetnion. The color is nice though.

Smell - The smell revealed some apple and some sourness. I think I may have a bottle that is a bit old. Not real citrus to speak of. It smells a bit dank and stale and rotten.

Taste - Rank!!!! Almost like amonia. This beer is old. Sorry, but I can't give this a proper review.

Mouthfeel - The mouthfeel seems medium and dry. Couldn't really tell because I was too distracted.

Drinkability - Couldn't drink it. Drain pour.

12oz bottle poured into my brand new Gouden Carolus glass...Pours a dirty, murky light brown, much darker in the middle. The head is light tan, doesn't rise more than a finger with poor lacing...A light dank aroma of alcohol, caramel, and grass hops. Actually pretty decent for a pale ale, could use a touch less alcohol and caramel...The taste brings out even more alcohol, way to much for a pale, would love to know the abv here to see if this is supposed to a double pale ale or just really poor execution. Wet grassy and strong hops finish the beer, bitter finish. A touch of the sweetness from the aroma would probably have balanced this out...Full feel, crisp sip. Tough to crush which is what I like in my apa's.

Not worth trying yet

This is a drinkable hoppy ale. It does not pour a significant head, but the copper color is very pleasant.

This is a local beer for me, which means I've also had it on tap many times. If you like hops and want a local brew in Kentucky, this is the beer for you.
