Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

BBC's version of an India Ale Ale, named as such because of its popularity with British Troops in colonial India. The beer’s alcoholic strength and high hopping rates (hops also act as a preservative) helped it withstand the long ocean voyage from England. Brewed with lots of pale ale malt and caramelized wheat and barley, we then add large quantitites of American Columbus, Simcoe and Cascade hops. Then we allow the hot wort to run through a bed of raw hops (known as the hopback) prior to fermentation. This process adds a burst of hop aroma and flavor. Big, bold and bitter, just like Jeff Gesser.

poured into a pint a hazy honey golden with a satisfying full head. little aroma. first taste is somewhat astringent. Others reference bubblegum and while there is an underlying sweetness, it is secondary to a strong chemical astringency. Mouthfeel is acceptably viscous but overly fizzy with a hint of sting. The pleasant bite of hops and its piny resinous finish is welcome but fails to rise to the top. The finish is bitter but not so much of hops but more of a chemical profile.

Don't get me wrong, I finished it. But in a world populated by easily accessible DIPAs and big IPAs, the bar is rather high. BBC fails (as do most) to create a well-balanced hop bomb, but they also fail to provide a satisfyingly hoppy monster with the fresh and natural flavors of hops that the best un-balanced DIPAs exhibit.

I had a pint of this somewhat cloudy beer at the local brew-pub in Louisville. There was no head on it by the time it was served to me, which may have been the waiter's fault as he was kind of slow on the food delivery too. The beer is very hoppy, which I like a great deal. Other than that hoppy taste, the beer was average at best.

750 ml bottle

Poured with a huge head, nice aroma of hops and a slight bubblegum flavor. Slightly cloudy. Some what nutty flavor behind the hoppiness and alcohol. A little strong for my taste so I am probably not the best reviewer for this type, but I enjoyed it.

Got it in Kentucky on a trip about three years back.

Poured a Sam Glass "pint"
My careful pour yielded a nice two inch foam!

Smells light, bubble gum? Looks dark mahogany.

Pleasantly bitter. Mild and lasting. Like an English bitter without enough malt.
Not malty at all. My style IPA, well aged & mellow. Nutty.

Poured a light copper color with a dirty white head and good carbonation.
Nose is malty, earthy with floral, pine and citrus. Taste is chewy and malty, def not a West Coast IPA or take on it. Caramel malts, spice, floral, citrus notes. Creamy mouthfeel and the ABV was nice. Balanced IPA and pretty good overall.

A bit shocked this hasn't been reviewed or even put on here.

A. A nice deep copper color with a huge head though rather thin in body.

S. Nice good caramel and hops but something almost metallic that takes a great smell rather average.

T. Good bitter, spicy hops. Finishes and even starts with plenty of sweet malt. Doesn't compare in hop bitterness to some of the better IPAs but the hops here just work for me.

M. A bit thicker than I'd want. The head it thinner expected. Plenty of carbonation. All and all nothing special here.

D. I enjoyed this and had no issue having a few glasses, but I'm more than likely not going to try this again. A solid but forgettable double IPA.

All and all most hop head will enjoy this. It is well worth a try, but don't expect to be surprised by something out of this world or innovative.
