Dogbolter is a Munich-style dark lager. Central to this style is a rich malt character reflected in the make-up of the grist. We carefully selected six different malts including Pale, Crystal, Wheat, Chocolate Malt and Chocolate Wheat to deliver a rich caramel, chocolate and toffee flavour. Chocolate malts also give Dogbolter its dark ruby colour.

Format: a solid very dark brown 345mL bottle with a standard Matilda Bay label. Decent.

Appearance: pours out a deep brown with a light haze. A finger of heavy tan head hangs about for quite a while. The lace is good down the whole glass. Looks good.

Aroma: some cocoa chocolate and a touch of toasted malts and roast coffee.

Taste: some caramels join the cocoa and toasted malts here. Decent.

Aftertaste: drops away quite quickly which is a bit disappointing. Otherwise fine witha touch of bitterness.

Mouth feel: light- to-moderate in feel with a moderate carbonation. Again quite reasonable.

Overall: a nice offering from Matilda Bay, but completely blown out of the water by its price of AU$90 a case. I'm getting very tired of semi-boutique Australian breweries thinking "hey, this isn't VB or XXXX, so lets charge a bomb!" This is more than the Germans charge for their Munich Dunkel and that is dangerous, since this isn't quite on the same level. Price aside, it's a decent and drinkable dark lager.

On tap at Great Northern. From notes.

A - Poured a light brown with a two finger khaki head. Mild carbonation. Bright. Great spatter rings of lace and a finger of retention.

S - Nutty, caramel, some gentle hop. Really malty, quite nice toffee sweetness.

T - Coffee, some roasty malt, sweet malt, less rich, more sweetness.

M - Nice carbonation, medium body, toasty sweet finish.

O/D - Tasty and pleasant. Aroma beats the flavour but it was a nice Dunkel.

A - Very dark molasses brown underneath a finger of light tan spongy head.

S - Wheat, treacle, chocolate.

T - Roasted malt, caramel, chocolate, coffee, a slight citric bitterness from the hops.

M - Light to moderate in body. High carbonation. Smooth, dry finish.

O - Very malty lager. Much better at room temperature so let it warm for 15 minutes after pulling it out of the fridge.

Pours a deep mahogany with little head - dies with no lacing.

Aromas of caramel, roast malts, chocolate and coffee.

Taste is lighter than the smell, but sweet malt driven. No real bitterness to speak of.

Mouthfeel is light, not too heavily carbonated, which balances out for smooth drinking.

A class above the Big Helga, that I had before it. Interesting... would it be better warm? (drinking on a cold night).

A - Pours a Mahogany colour with anice creamy head that reduces to a film all to quickly.

S - Some roasted grain and caramel malts.

T - Nice and roasty up front, quite smooth texture, hints of coffee and chocolate that is very well balanced with caramel. Subtle and yet marked.

M - Medium body and medium carbonation.

O - A very nicely structured beer that has plenty on offer

Part of my project to mop up some of the more common Aussie beers I haven't reviewed.

Pours a very deep red-brown, quite dark, but with good clarity. Head is reasonably thick and frothy, a light yellow-tinged beige. Some pancake bubbling as it settles. Lacing is good, like a good German lager in that respect. Fine carbonation. Really looks very nice indeed.

Nose is deep and grainy, with a lot of roasted characters. Hints of sugar as well, with some brittle toffee characters, although the darkness tends to overwhelm these. Pretty decent.

Taste is similar, although the burnt roasted character is the dominant force here, especially on the back. Front is milder, with some crisp grain character, on the finish, there's some pleasant toasted bread flavours. Feel is certainly a little thin, but not as bad as I remember - it was the failing point for this beer when I've had it in the past.

Yeah, a very decent beer. Tasty, but mild enough to be approachable. Also, better than I remember, and that's worth something.

Poured into a schooner, got a couple of fingers of tan head which dissipated into a thin lacing. The body itself is very dark. Cola and ruby on the fringes, opaque otherwise.

Nice malty smell, light caramels a little bit of chocolate and a touch of phenols and wheat graininess. Hops isn't playing a large part.

Taste is dominated by toffee and caramel malts, and a bitter chocolate is in the mix too along with a wheat graininess. Theres just enough of a citric bitterness from the hops to balance this out well.

Mouthfeel was light, and I found the carbonation a little overly high. I think it would have been more flavoursome with a little less bubble explosion.

Easy to drink and tasty, and nice and crisp for a dark beer. Definitely would pick this up again.

Deep, toasty, chocolate. Mild earthy hops. Rich malts play out nicely.

Clear, red colour with a decent sized, light tan head. Good retention.

Rich and malty with good toasty notes and some nice melanoidins. Clean yeast character and just a hint of hops. A light mineral note is a pleasant addition. I get a slightly watery note on the end.

Moderate mouthfeel with average carbonation. Good.

A really drinkable beer with good flavour. Well done.

This beer pours a dark coca cola colour with nice carbonation that leaves a one finger cappicino laced head that dissapates quite quickly,it has aromas of coffee, cocoa and roasted malts,it has an above average mouthfeel that fills the palette with nice notes of roasted coffee malts and dark chocolate that finishes with a subtle hop bitter edge that is well balanced out by the full mouth malty feel, quite a lucious beer that i will definately buy again.

This pours a dark brown with an ok head which settles to some patchy coverage.

Some nice dark roasted malt notes on the nose - chocolate and coffee.

The coffee really dominates on the palate with a nice long bitterness.

A little bit fizzy for my liking.

Dark cola with ruby edges and a soft tan head. Strong chock caramel nose with chicory and coffee in the background and some hop presence. Very nice. A big solid mouthfeel with those chocolate and coffee notes jumping out. Creamy and smooth with a soft bitterness and good long finish. A tasty beer for sure

Dark copper/ruby. Thick tan head, nice and creamy.
Toasty malt dominated aroma, almost roasted. Quite sweet though, there's definitely some toffee and caramel. It's all quite subtle though.
Flavour is mostly roasted malt. Again, its quite sweet. No bitterness, very little hops.
Good creamy carbonation.
