Although I live near Grand Rapids, I work at Ferris St U, so I occasionally stop by Grunst Brothers to pick up some decent beer. They do have a substantial craft brew selection, although some of it can be very old. There's lots of dust from the old building, but I found Great Lakes BC beer that expired in 2003 while shopping there in 2005. I always check freshness dates when I'm there and avoid ales that don't have any, if I can. The prices are very reasonable, though, like $1.20 for Sam Adams singles (although they want $7.49 for a sixer of SA, so I ask for six singles instead - you can't fool the math professor!). It is depressing to watch all the people head straight for the cooler and the cases of Bud and Miller right across from the good beer shelf. Overall, though, it's a decent place, the price is right, and if you live in Big Rapids you don't have a choice anyway!

Stopped in here about a week ago after my math professor and fellow BA'er told me about it. The store's appearance leaves something to be desired, a bit dingy and old. Regardless, the beer selection was pretty good. A lot of different breweries are represented, and the prices are surprisingly reasonable for this area. I expected the prices to be much higher. Some of the bottles looked a little old with a layer of dust on them, so check the dates if possible. The thing that really hurts this store was the service. When I walked up to check out, one cashier was talking about how she kept getting thrown in jail(!?), and then the guy ringing up my beer overcharged me a ridiculous amount. Luckily, I was able to straighten it out. The store also has a good selection of wine if you're into that. I will probably be returning to this store seeing as how it's the only place around here.

I have lived in Big Rapids for five years and just found out the Grunst Brothers has real beer. I stopped by when I saw the sign out front advertising Oktoberfest beers. Inside is a bit dingy but they do have a decent selection. Price wise they are a bit more than you will pay in Grand Rapids but it is just around the corner for me. They have a pretty wide variety of beers, both foreign and domestic microbrews. The good beer there is housed on the shelf rather than in the cooler, and the help there doesn’t seem to know much about the product, so it is not a situation where you can go and get a recommendation. However, as far as I can tell this is the only place to buy quality beer in the Big Rapids area. If you are in town and need real beer, you can find it at Grunst Brothers.

Update:

I stopped in there today and have changed my mind a bit. The beer there has not just been sitting on the shelf, and it is pretty cheap. 1.20 for a Sam Adams Cream Stout single, and the big bottle or Chimay Red is two dollars cheaper than it is at other beer shops!
