A dry stout in the Irish tradition. It's roasty with hints of chocolate and coffee, black and full bodied. The addition of oatmeal offers a soft smooth finish. Mildly hopped with Northern Brewer and English Kent Goldings hops with an ABV of 4.8%.

Served in a pint glass

A: This beer pours an opaque, deep chocolate brown with a film of light brown head. Nice ample wispy lacing is left on the glass.

S: Nose is rich milk and dark chocolates notes, and a hefty amount of roastiness.

T: Taste starts with a rich creamy milk chocolate, starts to gain a toasted character with dark chocolate creeping in. Roast is an underlaying flavor through the whole beer and then coffee comes through giving a nice bitter coffee after taste.

M: Medium body, medium carbonation, creamy, silky body to this.

O: Goes down easy, very tasty, not too filling, not much of a kick, very nice representation of style. This is a stout to sit with for a long period of time... which is why I left with a growler of it as well.

On-tap at the brewpub.

A: Black body with reddish highlights and a thin ring of light-brown bubbles. Ok.

S: Pleasantly pedestrian stout aroma of coffee + dark fruits. A touch of licorice. Nothing special, but still fairly interesting.

T: Coffee up front, followed by some dark chocolate, a bit of licorice, and a rather watery finish. This certainly has some potential, but it just doesn't follow through.

M: Quite light-bodied for a stout, but nicely full of creamy carbonation.

O: I really liked the touch of licorice that gave this one some individuality, but in the end its thinness (both in body and flavor) kept it from being much better than average for the style. Not terrible, just average.

I bought a growler of this on my way home from a business trip. I wanted a dark beer and this is what was available. The beer is decent but nothing special. It has a dark brown color and a roasted malty nose. There isn't much head or retention on the beer and the one knock is the thinness. This isn't a particularly hardy stout. The beer has a slight hop profile, roasted notes throughout, dark malts, some chocolates, maybe a slight coffee note or two. Nothing over the top, nothing that distinctive either. A decent beer, but not one I will rush out to try again.

Sampled on December 11, 2010. The pour is a rich dark black with maybe a half-inch of foamy tan head that dissolves after a few moments. Coffee grinds and dark chocolate malts stand out in the aroma. The body is rather thin though. The taste starts out with a nice coffee grind flavor and finishes with a thin but noted hoppiness.

A) Opaque. Tan colored head creamy and thin. Sticky lacing.
S) Roasted coffee. Chocolate. Light smokiness.
T) Light breadyness. Smoky at points but not consistent. Flavor is kind of weak, but a noticeable hop bite.
M) Not too heavy in the body. Some grittyness. Fairly smooth. Light fizzyness - to a porter in the mouthfeel.
D) A decent stout. I might consider another.

On tap this beer was a true onyx color with a head colored like baker's chocolate powder. The one finger of foam displayed sub-par retention and streaky lacing. The aroma was semi-sweet, a blend of coffee, light chocolate and roasted malt. The flavors were similar but better developed. At first it was roasted malt, then blackened malt and lots of coffee before the chocolate really kicked in. Good balance of malt and hops, sweetness and bitterness. The finish was bitter and coffee-like but not too oily or heavy-handed. The mouthfeel was full, the carbonation excellent (delicate but not soft so it helped fill-in the body) and the body was medium/full. Rich and solid, a fine example of the style.

Dropped by the brewery and brought a groule of this stout home. What a bargain, with the growler deposit the price was $12.

A - pitch black with a nice tan head
S - coffee and light roasted grain
T - roasted grains, coffee and bakers chocolate. There's a hint of hop but this is all about the roasty goodness
M - medium bodied, nicely carbonated, sharp dry finish.
D - light, quaffable and dry. a sessionable pub brew.

Bought this last Friday and haven't had a chance to drink it until now. It was sealed well though.

Color: Pours a pitch black color with some carbonation (better than none!).

Aroma: Smooth and roasty with a strong lean towards roasted coffee with mild chocolate as well.

Taste: Very roasty upfront. Hops show through followed by a decent roast coffee kick. Simple and smooth. Decent breakfast stout.

Mouthfeel: Roasty like coffee. Bitterness is well-balanced. Smooth. Drinkable.

Drinkability: Pretty good for the style. Feels just a tad bit thin but still hits the spot for what it is. I should have had it on tap though as I like this almost as much as their Red Ale.

Verdict: If you go to this brewery, order the RIP Stout. You;; thank me.

on tap at the brewery, this one arrived near black with a nice looking dark tan loose head. Nose is of the expected burnt malts. This a big flavorful stout, lots of sharred malts, cocoa and chocolate. If you enjoy big, roasty stouts (like me) you will not go wrong here. Another worthy and tasty brew from 7 Barrel.

This is a pint of cask-conditioned RIP Stout served at Seven Barrel Brewery in W Lebanon, NH.

Appearance: The ale is pitch black with a bit of brownish head that is not as big as I would have expected.

Smell: Deep dark roasted malt notes dominate the nose.

Taste: The cask conditioning has amplified the roasted notes, giving the ale a deeper chewier flavor. The roasted malts still dominate, but they have taken on a creamy flavor.

Mouthfeel: The roasted malts are very dry, making one reach for another sip.

Drinkability: The ale is very quaffable with a roasted malt body that provides a great deal of sweetness. This was the best beer that I had at Seven Barrel Brewery.

A creamy, coffee colored head that remains a creamy sheet throughout the pint. Nice layered and ringed lacing with good strength. A slick, midnight black in color.

Dark chocolate, roasted coffee beans, and a touch of vanilla in the nose.

A burnt/roasted dark chocolate malt character that is surprisingly bold yet not dry in the least. Creamy espresso and hazlenut flavors join the slightly bitter chocolate. Finishes a tad bitter, with notes of dark fruit and chocolate in the aftertaste. The flavors are more reminiscent of an Imperial/Baltic Porter than a Stout (not that I'm complaining).

Full bodied; smooth and creamy like a milkshake on the palate.

Good enough to order another pint or take a growler to go, even though this one does get rather filling.

Presentation: A growler from the brewery.

Appearance: Nearly pitch black all the way through, tight bubbly lace sticks well to the glass.

Smell: Chocolaty, malted milk shake and slight coffeeish roasted grain.

Taste & Mouth Feel: Very smooth and creamy with a solid medium body. Lots of dark chocolate on the palate with undertones of dark roasted coffee, malted milk balls and cappuccino come to mind. Faintly fruity and mild on the hops. Finishes with a long semi-sweet roasted finish.

Drinkability & Notes: Such a flavorful brew, perhaps the best on-tap during my visit and not too shabby coming from a tap filled growler.

Opaque black with coffee-brown edges peaking through, topped with a thin lace and little retention. Soft malted milk ball aroma. Velvety smooth viscous feel. Hints of bitterness. Smooth chocolate with sweet caramel, light coffee, mild roastiness, chicory, carob, sweet milk, and powdery grain.

Not as robust as I'd want, but very flavorful.

Tan head of mixed-size bubbles, some huge, giving the appearance of an unflipped pancake on a dark skillet. Some chestnut hue at the very edge. Otherwise opaque mahogany (not black!)

Light aroma of roasted malts. Flavor is pleasantly balanced with chocolate and coffee notes.

What will make me order this again was the outstanding creamy mouthfeel. Very very creamy. Lovely. One might consider ordering it even if afraid of cask-conditioned characteristics. This is a stout that reacts well to this serving style.
