Paul’s Pale Ale is an old school, west-coast style pale ale that starts off with nutty and caramel notes from a blend of crystal malts and finishes with a satisfying hoppiness, making this an easy-drinking pale ale. Paul’s Pale Ale has been the hands-down favorite of the SBC regulars and staffers since 1998!
A tribute to the founder of the company that founded Springfield Brewing Company back in 1997. Paul Mueller was a pioneer of American industry and Springfield Brewing Company was a pioneer of revitalizing downtown Springfield. Today, the brewery is no longer owned by the Paul Mueller Company, but Paul’s spirit lives on.

Brought a six pack of this back down to Austin from Springfield, Missouri. Poured a 12 ounce bottle into a pint style glass, no visible freshness date.
A: Beautiful deep amber color. Not quite as much head as I would have expected, but keeps a nice bit of head as it's being consumed and leaves some excellent lacing on the glass.
S: Spicy citrus pine notes hit the nose up front from the cascade hops, which are balanced nearly to perfection from the caramel malt sweetness and ester flavors. Hints of apple and red grapes blend very nicely with other citrus notes typically detected in a N.W. style pale. Earthy like ester flavors are also quite present.
T&M: Unlike many APAs, this one is bit more balanced up front, as the deep malt character hits the tongue up front with some caramel sweetness and provides an excellent backbone once the spiciness of the cascade hops hit. Nearly perfect balance of all the things one would expect for the style, as the hops never dominate, but rather give a nice dose of spicy, grassy citrus and pine notes, blending nicely with apple and grape like earthy ester flavors in a semi-dry finish with just a touch of alcohol and lingering caramel sweetness. Mouthfeel is spot on for the style, as it's a bit creamy, medium-bodied, with low to medium carbonation.
D&Notes: I have been drinking at the Springfield Brewing Company for 10 years, and their beers rarely disappoint, and this one is without a doubt one of their best. Funny as it may sound, I have never really taken the time to drink this beer that much. The Springfield Brewing Company is actually owned by a company that manufacturers brewing equipment (Paul Mueller Company), and consequently offers some outstanding lagers year-round, that are rarely found in brew-pubs of it's size. At least for me, that almost makes it a bit more difficult to drink their pale ale as much, as it seems every brew-pub and microbrewery under the sun offers a pale ale.
All of that being said, this is an outstanding pale ale this balanced to perfection. According to their website, it clocks in at 25 bitterness units, which is just over 10 less than a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. This is one brew not to be missed, as this pale ale could hold its own to almost any other out there.

Average taste for a brew. Solid price point for what you get. A bit acidic but not overpowering in hoppiness. Sweetness is neutral so don’t expect more. Smooth and easy to drink.

12oz bottle. Poured out a clear, golden orange color with a good-sized, tan head of foam. It smelled of caramel, toffee, floral notes and citrus. A little malt with a citrusy bite and mild bitterness.
