The bottle of Springfield Anniversary Ale I sampled suffered greatly from a sharply off-putting aroma of wet cardboard-- suggesting that this bottle had gotten oxidized somehow. As this was the first and only time I've sampled this beer I cannot say if the problem was indicative of the entire batch, or just one (or more) bottles. This generously malty brew is otherwise just above average in drinkability, but it's quality is seriously hampered by this possible oxidation problem. And it's a shame, because someone held onto this thing for almost 4 years.

500mL swing top bottle. Thanks to BA rugbycritic for bringing this back from a Springfield business trip. The label denotes the 2002 vintage. It also indicates that a portion of the brew was aged in Missouri oak barrels. I suppose that means some was aged in this fashion and then blended with the remainder of the batch. This barleywine pours a syrupy, hazy mahagony. The head dissipates quickly leaving a thin layer. The aroma is alcohol and overipe dark fruits - prune and booze soaked raisins. A occasional swirl in the snifter provides a burst of aromatics. Taste is sweet fermented goodness - alcohol makes its presence known as well as candied fruits. Challenger (bittering) and East Kent Goldings are the hops of record and provide minimal balance of the hefty grain bill. I cannot detect any oak barrel flavor attributes. The abv is not listed on the bottle but I'd guess it's around 10 - 10.5%. Overall a nice 2+ year old English style barleywine that may have benefited from laying down a little longer. Oh well, it was still a tasty sipper.
