The Fat Cat is a stop for me a couple times a year when I'm in Muskegon and I need something outside of a regular release type of craft beer.

It's in a good location when you're on the North side of Muskegon Lake and has recently become more integrated with a great pizza place (Bernie-O's) that resides nextdoor. It's a nice way to pick up a sixer and a unique pie to take home.

Service is always friendly. The staff seems to know their stock and pricing points.

The selection can be somewhat of a mystery as it tends to rotate. At times I've been really impressed, and others I've thought it was so-so. Even on the so-so days there's something I haven't tried before (I've never been disappointed in a decision to stop by).

Pricing is on the verge of getting another $ from my rating. Individual beers are about a quarter more than I'd pay at home. That adds up when you're buying mixed sixers with any regularity. Then again, this is more of a place I'll stop when I'm in town and not my regular shop.

I don't think it's a place that I'd tell somebody to go out of there way to shop. That said, overall, it's the best place to go when you're looking for something different in North Muskegon. It beats the heck out of any of the grocery stores or gas station selections within a good 10 mile radius or more.

I swung by The Fat Cat today for the first time to see what the store was all about and what exactly they had in stock. It was kind of hard to find at first as I had never been in that part of Muskegon.

The store is fairly dark inside and it seems to be geared towards wine drinkers first and beer drinkers second. They also apparently have cigars, but wine and cigars hardly interest me as much as their beer selection. All of their beers are reasonably priced and also they are all priced as singles and you are allowed to make your own six-pack.

The Fat Cat doesn't have a big selection but most of their beers are things that I would be unable to find at any other store within at least a 20 mile radius. Also there aren't any macros.

I was there last night 11/19/06 This is a small store but it has a nice atmosphere. The wine selection seemed a little thin. The beer selection is eclectic as far as beer goes. It seemed like they were trying the shotgun approach. They were out of my favorite Founders IPA. I spoke with the owner and quickly firgured out that she has very little beer knowledge and has been buying mostly what the salsemen have wanted to push. I'm hopeing that beer people will have a greater influence on the selection in the future.

This is a small store, right on the four corners in North Muskegon, with only perhaps two dozen individual different beers. The beer selection they do have is mainly microbrews like Bells, Michigan Brewing Co, ect. A relativly new store, the owner however is very nice and is willing to order almost any beer you can name. Not a overly huge selection, but there isn't too many stores in the area that sell non macrobrew. The store also sells wine and some other things that I wasn't really interested in... I just focused on the beer. I will be sure to stop by there the next time I am in the area, if nothing else to see how the store is evolving.
