I had previously rated this store at a perfect 5. However, once i realized that Freddie was not only shipping older than told Pliny to me, he was actually ripping me off as well. We made an agreement to trade 1 case of Pliny for one case of Heady topper i had access to. I can't begin to tell you how much business i have not only brought Freddie but done with him. I would say well over $6,500 worth from just quickly looking over my receipts from him. I would not only order many many beers from him usually 24 to 48 at a time, we would exchange Pliny the elder for my header topper. But the first time i received the case from him there was only 12 and he told me that is a full case/ since its 16 OZ its only 12 not 24. Thinking from what i knew that sounded a little absurd but then i decided no what "he won't lie to me" so i let it slide and believed him. After doing business with many other of my own customers, i shipped a case of Pliny to a good friend of mine who said "you only shipped me 12" i told him thats all that comes in a case. Well he informed me that he called Russian River and that 24 is a case for them. So i called Freddie and asked him about this and requested that he either send me the remainder of the cases he owes me or i would not be sending the 2 cases of header topper for the ONE case of Pliny he shipped me. He would not budge and said that we agreed on 12 Plinys for 24 Headys, which is true BECAUSE he told me that was a case. Which he knew was a lie and had pulled one over on me. I felt horrible about not sending him the heady topper (even though i have sent him at least 14 cases of header topper which he sells through his online beer business at $12 a can, for a lousy 7 cases of pliny at $7.99 a piece w/o shipping) Long story short he never would make up for lying/ purposely mis informing me about the true quantity of a Pliny case, he then called me daily for about a month and then monthly still to this day, has been about a year. All he had to do was make it right or at least act like he was by sending me a case or two. He then tried to charge my credit card i had used to make previous purchases through him for $174 for the one case of PLINY he sent me for the TWO cases of Heady topper. However, I had to get a new card (thanks hackers of Target) and he informed me he was charging my card now because i didn't send him his cases. I thought he was a stand up guy and had no doubt he would make this right once i brought it to his attention, but no he didn't. So therefore, he lost my business completely and a few friends of mine. Also I wrote this statement below because he called and told me a former employee was making lies up about him. so i wrote a good review about him because i felt he deserved it. well now his true colors have shown and i completely retract my previous review. I did however leave it up so you can see how quickly it went from being a great guy to deal with to the review i have just written. however he does have a great selection and rare beers. UPDATE... Just received a text message from Freddie " thanks for the review low life" if you would like me to send you a picture of this text message, message me! I am going to create a link however that you can click on to see the text message also.

Well, I had not ever been here before, but I heard about their epic beer selection. So I "liked" Beverages 4 Less on Facebook so I can keep updated on their new beer releases. I saw a news feed on my wall from B4L saying that they had Bourbon County Stout. Well, of course I was all over it. I know that beer is not available here so I took the long drive to Santee to check this out.

My GPS got me there and I parked right away in the 15min parking and walked in, very excited. When I crossed the door I said, with much excitement "I heard you have some Bourbon County". Right away the gentleman behind the counter said "only to customers I want to give it to". WOW! I was in shock. So I tried to play it cool, thinking that maybe it was his weird sense of humor. I browsed the beer selection and he started quizzing me by shouting things out like "Where did you hear that I have the Bourbon Count?" I politely answered "I saw it on your facebook feed". He then started to quiz me "Oh so what else did you see that we have in?". I confessed that the Bourbon County was the only thing I have seen from B4L lately on my facebook feed.

He then received a phone call and I left him alone while he handled business on the phone. I looked at the impressive beer selection and waited until he was done with his phone call to ask "So, will you sell me one?", I asked. He answered "No. It's not worth it to me".

So I walked out, completely unsatisfied and misled.

Dear B4L. I know you are not close to me. I really would make the long drive to pay you for your great beer selection. I just wish you treated me the way most businesses should treat customers. Perhaps I am not a long time customer, but I could have been one and I probably would have been given you treat me like a decent human being. This was by far one of the worst customer service experiences I have ever had. I know a lot of beer people are snobby, but this was unexcusable. That said, if I do hear that your service is better and perhaps you were having a bad day, I will gladly delete this review and give you rave reviews upon a pleasant visit.

Since the Bro's have buried the specifics of place reviews, i.e., quality/quantity etc. I thought I'd upgrade this revew 10/14. I hereby downgrade from 2.41 via whatever former calculation was valid to 1.0 which more accurately states my likelihood of doing business here again. Cheers, and keep good records..

Hey 'Freddy', shoot me an email some time. Interesting that I've visited your store a dozen times and yet we never have engaged in conversation, nor have I been the beneficiary of your 'gracious bottle samplings' that others speak of. I don't think you exist and in fact I'm quite sure of it. In fact let me say that you are a fraud as are the bulk of your reviews. And I don't approach this lightly.

You manipulate the system well, rising to number 1 as for San Diego. Good job. You've seen my last dollar by the way, and that of everyone I know thanks to your deceit.

Please do not believe the high rating this store has. The store is awful. Be warned.

The owner of "Beverages 4 Less" purportedly shelves out continuous reviews on his own store to up the rating (Check the A ratings/reviewer age on the site, look at the review before mine). Wow, who does this? No shame. The pricing is awful, his store is a bombed out shack in Afghanistan and his business practices are self-centered. I love capitalism, supply & demand, beer investments but this man is just a scumbag. Please do not support these kind of people, they are the dregs of society; self-centered, self-righteous jerks who leech and take advantage of others because "they can".

Freddie remains a world class douchebag. He overcharges for his beer and resells beer illegaly.

Latest was Black Tuesday, retails for $30 brewery only. He was reselling 2 cases at $85/ea to the east coast only. Clear violation of the three-tier laws.

Beer sits warm, probably the stuff he ships east. Only suckers buy from this guy.

He's well known for sending his mules out to make a buck off special releases and starving the market of consumers who the beer is intended for.

You'll note the only positive reviews are coming from out of state people who'll do anything for locals. They don't care if laws are violated.

So i get a BM from scorpionpower:

Title: "you have plenty time in your hand"

Body: "you know what an a*** just f*** up leave Brewery alone and not talk about Alpine "

This guy has 1 post, to a thread about Abyss and where to get it and he posts only the url for beverages-4-less.

One of Freddie's many fake accounts to pimp his store. If the Bros want to check, the BM is saved.

Not sure why my review keeps getting deleted, but i will try again and leave out any vivid descriptors. Simply put, this place is awful. IPA's on hot shelves, marked up prices, aggressive sales person, selection is ok, but nothing special, the place is dressed up like your standard liquor store that sells 40s and lotto tickets. Location is also a bit of a pain, right on a super busy street in the middle of a santee thoroughfare. It gets a ton of recommendations from out of towners who doesnt understand the san diego layout, but this place is beyond out of the way for anyone who doesnt live in the area. A better option would be palm liquor. I would advise against spending your money here.

Where to start with Beverages 4 Less. Behind the facade of an ugly liquor store you'll find beverages 4 less. It's essentially a liquor store with lots of beer. They have a few coolers and an okay selection, but you'll quickly notice the large quantity of beer sitting out on the shelves unrefrigerated. After a walk around the store, you'll stop to wipe the sweat from your forehead and wonder how the beer is faring. You'll touch a dusty bottle with your hand and find that it's warm to the touch. That can't be good for the beer. No, it's not good for the beer at all. It's one hundred degrees on any given day in Santee, and this place does not have Air Conditioning. Would you buy beer that is cooking on a store shelf in 100 degree weather? No, you wouldn't do that, so do not shop here if you care about quality. I haven't eaten any of the liquor store food here, so I can't comment on that. The selection is okay, but most of the beer is dangerously warm so that really limits your options. The service is awful. The owner makes you feel like you're in a used car lot the way he barks at you and constantly refers to himself in the third person. It's creepy. The man will creep you out. Then he'll sell you a bottle for $4 more than he sold it to the last customer. Walk. Walk away now. I bought a bottle of Parabola here and he told me that "Freddie is the only one who got it" and that "you should be happy that Freddie sell you this bottle cus it's very rare and Freddie only sell it to the good customer." Yea, he feeds you that sort of BS, like he's afforded you a glimpse into the inner circle, some secret society ruled by this liquor store owner who can purportedly get you anything you want. Turn around and head back to one of San Diego's other fine bottle shops. Most of the high reviews are from people who have never visited the store and witnessed the horror. Those who have been know better.

The guy that owns this place is a crook. He mules in beers from brewery release events and upsells them for exorbanant prices. Then he treats you like he's doing you a favor for ripping you off. I haven't been here in years because I flat out refuse to shop at this store. I know for a fact that he'll charge you more for beer if he realizes you've given his establishment a bad rating. Stop rating his shop highly. The beers are sitting out on a floor in 100 degree heat, they're warm to the touch. He used to blow fans on them to give you the perceived idea that they're being kept cool. Seriously, think about that one for a second. If he cared about his customers or his product he would install air conditioning in his store. Do not buy beer from this man.

This place advertises that its exceptionally good for beers but what happened to you modern day good customer service. I was reading a review on here and boy did they strike gold with their comment. Freddy is a used car salesman who will push everything and anything to you. I was sold a very old and out of date nearly a year old Pline the Elder. everyone knows that Pliney has to be finished within the first two months at the most. Freddy gave me a year old one. Not to mention his extremely high prices and low variety of cold brews, everything is room temperature sitting on shelves. And its not a bevmo! nothing close to it. He does have some hard to find beers but so do a few other beers in east county such as Weldeck Liquor in la Mesa, and Windy City Liquor in El Cajon. Beer gurus do not go here! its a disaster waiting to happen!

Illegal beers sales, improperly stored IPAs, hassling used-car-salesman attitude, price discrimination, fake reviews, I can go on-and-on about how terrible this place is.

To elaborate:
As of today (July 12, 2011) the website lists "Three Floyd's Dreadnayght" [sic] & "Arltil Panzer Walf" [sic] as well as Bell's Expedition Stout, and Double Trouble. All of which are not distributed into California, and therefore, ARE NOT LEGAL TO SELL IN THIS STATE. And another time it was $9.99 for a single bottle of Founders Breakfast Stout (also illegal to sell in CA). He said, "It's $25 for a 4-pack of this stuff. And I'm the only person in California that sells it." No kidding. You're probably also the only person in California taking advantage of locals and non-locals alike by selling beers illegally through your store. BTW the stuff retails for $9-12 for a 4-pack.

As a former local customer I only bought IPAs from the refrigerator, not from the humongous stack of IPAs sitting in the middle of his store at 90*F+ temperatures (this is Santee, one of the warmest places in the entire county). Alpine, Ballast Point, Stone, etc., are all just sitting there ready for unknowing online customers to purchase. Not to mention seeing his minions at brewery-only releases buying their allotments and reselling them at his store to "online customers only" at absurd markups (Veritas 009 for $75+ a bottle!!).

Take one step into the store and get immediately hassled by Freddy, the owner. "What are you looking for?" "I get beers that no one else can get." "Look me up on BeerAdvocate - they all love me - they all know Freddy is the shit." This is not a dramatic reenactment.

Regarding the price discrimination, I have experienced it firsthand. He charged me $3 less for a bottle of a particular limited release beer than he charged my wife for the same bottle. Just read the other reviews, too.

How many of these reviews can possibly be real? Just look at how many people join the site, review Bev4Less the same day and never contribute anything else to the site, let alone even log on after that.

The selection is pretty damn good, considering the illegal beer sales and brewery-only-release muling. However, it's all more expensive than most other stores around the county.

I used to keep quiet and simply choose not to shop here anymore, but now I am just appalled by the practices at this store. It's time to let people know about this shady place. Its a good thing the ABC doesn't come in here and audit his sales to see that he's illegally selling beers that aren't distributed into California. But then again, how do we expect him to pay for the 7 series beemer out front?

Bottom line: Avoid at all costs.

ok guys, here we go again... My first post for Beverages-4-less got deleted, possibly because I was overly aggressive. I'm gonna give it another shot, but in a calmer manner

Let my start off by saying that anyone who believes all of these "A+" reviews is blind and too naive to see the obvious truth. Fred is using this site to his advantage to advertise his business. He is creating fake accounts and rating the store himself, and additionally, he is bribing his customers to put in good reviews. I went there for the first time to see what the hype was about. The store is a mess, it is dusty, and the bottles are uncared for. The service is awful because the owner is arrogant and tried to persuade me to buy the stuff he wanted to sell, which were completely irrelevant of the style of beer I like. As I was standing there, I kept wondering "how the hell is this place the number one store in SD?" I approached the check out stand with a couple of Alpines and a Delirium Nocturnum, then the owner asks me if I'm familiar with beer advocate and ratebeer.com. He then tells me to put in a good review and "he'll take care of me." When I heard that, I realized that the majority of these reviews are a fraud. His business depends on these reviews and people obviously are bought into them the same way I was. I do not care about going back there for him to "take care of me" because the way he's doing things is just not right... It is unfair for the true beer advocates who need to know the truth. I should have realized that when reviews from local customers are saying to "go on his website and order online." Pretty obvious if you decide to open your eyes....

Yeah, was in here a few days ago, and he does seem to raise his prices. Very pushy like a used car salesman. Was looking for a few hard to find bottles and was pushing some more of the expensive stuff saying that he is the only one who carries them only to find out that he somehow gets them before anyone, but is cheaper anywhere else. He was rude and cocky too. Stay away from this place and go to places like BDBS or OLIVETREE or even SOBAYLIQUOR. You will save yourself a lot of money and feel good about your purchases. This place is a ripoff.

This place is alright. The guy behind the counter seems a little pushy and the prices are way jacked up. Plus there's beers that never went into distribution on the shelves at ridiculous prices and I know my buddy bought a bomber of homebrew here too that was infected and gushed everywhere.

They have a home brew shop inside now. I took my CO2 tank inside to get filled, they over filled it and blew the safety valve on it then tried to charge me $20 to fix it. In the long run they paid to get it fixed but argued with me about how much it should cost.

I only go here when I'm desperate for homebrew supplies.

honestly freddie is shady and charging $10 for 12oz. of founders breakfast stout is ridiculous. freddie trades beer with people to get beers not distributed here and sells them for huge markups, not to mention he only sells rarities to regulars or if you spend over $60. freddie is a hoarder who enjoys beer but is shady in everything he does with high prices illegally reselling beers like dark lord, veritas, black tuesday and many more. do yourself a favor and head to olive tree, bevmo, knb or palm springs liquor, avoid freddy and his 80 degree shop...

Fuck this place. went there while visiting my sister in santee. Horrible from Freddy, kept trying to gouge the consumer every chance he got. Yeah he has a decent selection, but who care when you pay wayyy more there than somewhere else 15 20 min away.

I will never return or recommend this place to anyone, unless they are planning some kind of arson. Hate people who run their business this way, yes its legal but i dont have to support it, and i wont.

Owner Fred Hormiz is definitely trying to portray himself as a beer advocate. He takes it a little far though. Selection rivals most other liquor stores I have seen, but the prices are sometimes ridiculous. Watch out for old bottles of the hoppy stuff on the shelves. Too many dusty, hot bottles. Always well stocked with Alpine stuff, but who knows how old it is. Fred is a salesman in the truest sense of the word. A decent store though, with an (overly)enthusiastic owner. Too many other quality shops to go back to Bev 4 Less.

Freddy. He will try to sell you $9 cans of Surly. Or $12 cans of Heady. Online? No problem. Freddy will sell you $100 bottles of DDG. They get the same amount of beer as other stores in San Diego, but those stores won't demean you when you refuse to pay Freddy's high prices for illegal beer. Or charge you more for the normal stuff.

Come here to be overcharged, see illegal beer sales, and be hassled by Freddy.

The outside appearance matches the owner's personality.

My name is Scott Feutz and Today I was proudly told to "leave my store" by the ownerFreddy, and called a stupid Redneck. It came about because He was yelling about politics and I happened to point out that he might be incorrect. He got mad and said I "never listen to anyone and that I know everything". At that I started to laugh, because he just described himself. At that point he assaulted Me ( a Disabled Vet) by throwing his phone at me. He then told me to get out and as I was leaving he tried to spit on me. He also said that he hated MOST Americans because we think we need to get involved in everybody's problems.I know he is a self proclaimed Iraqi-American and probably has traveled more than myself but that doesn't mean I am a stupid American . I would call for any Servicemen and Women to boycott his store because he has no respect for their Service or what they have done for him. I went there for his weekly Beer tastings and for supplies to brew..Not anymore.I'll go to BNS Brewing

Just off the freeway Mission Gorge Rd from the 8/52 outside of San Diego - it's an average looking liquor store both inside and out - the beer selection is pretty good - ranging from normal stuff to the hard to find - prices are marked up throughout more than my locals mark up most of the time even for the average finds.
Only shopped in person - similar events/occurrences each time with an example below:
Stopped in from over an hour down. Be in quite a few times. Every time somethings not there or in back until you spend past a "threshold" and they "find" it. Went in for knuckle sandwich listed on the web. Tells my buddy they didn't have it, tells me it's in back. Ask him to get them limit one each. Ignores the request and we had to put back the bottles we would have purchased to go with it as this type of treatment has happened every time. It was my buddy's first and last time going to this shop despite the proximity on the way to/from a trip to Alpine Beer Co.
Last time this happened I had called and emailed before heading out to make sure the bottles would be there when we arrived from the long drive. Maybe I should opt for shipping or would they be "in back/out of stock" then too? The only saving grace is the selection - but what good is it if you can't actually buy them when you want just one or a couple things?
I was even ready to pay the mark up ($14.99 for Ovila that I get for $9.99, $8.99 for Karl Strauss 22nd I get for $6.49 for example).
I really hate posting things up this way but this has happened every time I'm in here and I've given it more than a few chances, the girlfriend even rolls her eyes when I mention trying to stop in there...

they have a very nice selection and they seem to get the rare stuff when other places dont. i got the sense that a good majority of his business is mail order...he'll ship just about anywhere

the prices he sells his beer for seem to be slightly higher than you might find at other retail locations. but it's his store and he can charge whatever he wants...beer is a luxury item and if you dont like the prices, you dont have to buy anything.

he'll put stuff aside for the people he likes and he won't sell stuff to you if he doesn't like you. it's a strange operation but like i said before...it's his store

went here a few times, never had any problems, and even suggested the place to people while working at another liquor store for hard to find items. Generally never had any issues...i knew going in i was going to pay a few dollars more per beer solely for the fact that they had it and other places didnt, and i was fine with that. What i was not fine with was being given a hard time for wanting to buy a "limited" release and not being a "regular" i was told i'd have to buy alot in order to get my "limited" release even though when you call they say they have it in stock. I was only able to find a few other items that i wanted. I was "allowed" my limited release beer but was told i was making things difficult! I'm giving them business not just from me but also suggestions! needless to say, despite the selection i wont be returning or suggesting to friends or people on the search anymore.

Freddy and his helpers are always willing to go the extra mile in order to help out a regular customer. They pay close attention to those who frequent their store and it pays dividend's when you do.
Every Friday they are willing to crack a couple bottles of their new shipments and let you try it out. I know this is not common practice, but it really helps when you are looking for something different and don't know if you want to spend the $5-$7 dollars for that bomber.
The store has a large selection of craft beers but most are very over priced for what you get. I don't recommended buying your locals here as they are price gauging the local customers....It's really unfortunate as this is a great beer store ran by greedy people who are just looking to make a quick buck on the mis-guided, uninformed joe smoe off the street.
The only positive I can say about this establishment is that they also sell brewing supplies and can come in handy in a bind if you live in East County. They do sell their products quickly, so you get fresh brewing supplies.

Visited this place while in San Diego for a science conference... that turned out to be more about beer than science.

Am I missing something about Beverages 4 Less? The outside appearance and setup of this store is less than appealing and the neighborhood its in makes me a little wary of going in, in the first place... IPA's and "perishable" beers are kept in the fridge and there are racks and racks of beer out on the floor. At least they know how to store their beer.

I asked the clerk at the counter about the bottles that they have on display on the wall ( a bunch of rare offerings + some limited distribution stuff). He responded by saying that all of them were, at one point or another, being sold at the store... so... they were selling Kate the Great in the store? Ok... not impressed... and now even a little MORE wary.

Selection is very reasonable but maybe I just went on a bad day? The variety of beers here is monstrous but they were out of stock on a lot of semi-rare beers (ie. ASGC, Deliverance, Pliny, etc.) Judging by what's on the wall though, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.

Very reasonable prices here for the most part except they were trying to charge $36 for a bottle of parabola... Still though, I feel like the prices I was paying on a majority of the items was very good.
