Poured into a CCB snifter. Tight, dark tan bubbles form a one-finger head on top of a black-as-night ale. Notes of earth and a touch of burned wood emerge.
Rich, decadent mouthfeel envelops a dark fruit, chocolate, espresso driven stout. Silky and very smooth. The body is on the light side of full. The taste reminds me of a dark chocolate covered blueberry. Toward the finish there is a brief moment in which you think you might be eating a chocolate mousse accompanied by fresh berries; the mouthfeel is truly special. The finish is bitter like a double shot of espresso. With that said, the finish is balanced, suggesting the brewer balanced the use of roasted barley along with toasted malts nicely. Alcohol is subtle. Complex without being overbearing or too busy.
A delicious imperial stout at a very reasonable price -- that alone should get you to buy a few of these; one for now, one for later (such as I have done). If you are new to craft beer, this might be a nice "bridge" beer to bring you to the darker and heavier side of the stout world. At the same time, seasoned veterans of stout drinking should find this spot on for full-flavor enjoyment. Beautiful by itself but might breathe fresh life into cheesecake or pannacotta.
