It's time to review this elusive, lone bottle from the cellar... a long-awaited sampling of a much sought-after Hoppin' Frog beer. I'll serve this in an oversize snifter and see what the beer judge (me) determines.

Appearance- Deep brown with a ruby red underpinning, the beer builds and supports a thin, cocoa-tinged head. With each swirl, the tiny bubbles re-emerge and fizzle away into the black abyss.

Smell- A magical balance of dark fruit, licorice, molasses, hops, and espresso come together seamlessly... it's hard to imagine how this aroma could possibly be improved.

Taste- Exquisite in every regard... the roasty, rich, decadent malt profile is in perfect harmony with the wickedly fresh hop bitterness that stings the tongue and lasts long after the swallow. Exceptional.

Mouthfeel/Drinkability- Prickly on the tip of the tongue, the bubbles pull back immediately and spread out, laying a large canvas for the rich flavors to unfurl in the mouth. This is a huge, complex, immaculate example of a RIS that must be experienced at least once.

Poured from a bottle into a snifter at around 50 degrees Fahrenheit

Appearance: Thick, motor oil pour and jet black in the glass with no light coming through. A half finger foamy dark brown head. Alcohol legs present. It doesn't look better than this for a stout

Smell: Huge roasted and chocolate malt bill with a undertone of dark fruit. I detect a good amount of alcohol in the nose as well

Taste: Wow, bold roasted malts upfront, milk chocolate sweetness in the middle, with an espresso like finish.

Mouthfeel: Fairly full bodied; Coats my mouth with a velvety feel. Some heat from the alcohol and a moderately bitter finish

Overall: It was a surprisingly cool fourth of July. After a night of pyrotechnics, I sit alone in complete silence on my porch as I analyze this beer. I could not have asked for a much better one. It's thick, bold, and velvety; Everything you'd want in a RIS. The only thing I can nit pick about is the presence of alcohol which takes away from the aroma and taste a little bit. But on a cold winter day that could be complimenting. I could see this aging beautifully. Reminds me a lot of Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout. Went perfectly with my Sarris chocolate bar. Not the best RIS I've had, but not too far behind either. A sipper of a beer. I'm looking forward to having this come winter. Holds its own next to the likes of Founders and Expedition. Highly recommended. Cheers!
