Poured into a snifter, this beer has pretty low carbonation. It is extremely black and viscous with little to no head and some faint brown lacing on the sides. A little swirling brings the head back fine and brown. I didn't detect much of a nose at first, but after some swirling I detected some burnt toast, candy apples, and licorice.

One taste and you realize that, oatmeal or no oatmeal, this is a genuine Russian Imperial Stout. No question about it. It has that rummy char-like flavor that one finds in no other style of beer. Nice accents of dark toast, figs, licorice, and cola accompany this flavor along with a nice hop kiss. It has a firm, creamy mouthfeel that is divine. I'm not sure what role the oatmeal plays here, but if it's to make the beer smoother and creamier, then it is performing this role admirably.

This is simply an outstanding beer. It has a huge flavor with no booziness or unwanted sweetness. Easily one of the better RISs I've had. It is very reminiscent of Old Rasputin in that it has a lot of character, but is quite a bit smoother, creamier, and better balanced. I can't wait to crack open my bottles of DORIS and barrel-aged BORIS.

Pretty darn good RIS

A: Single fingered creamy light brown head with good retention and some lacing. The head settles to a thin ring and lasts throughout the tasting.

S: Dark chocolate, little bit of coffee with molasses and syrup.

T: Dark chocolate accompanied by earth undertones. Fairly dry for the style, which is a pleasant surprise.

M: Fairly heavy and well carbonated.

O: I loved that the beer was drier than others of this variety, but still felt the flavors could have been more robust.

I did not perceive much in the way of oatmeal character in the malt, but this beer nicely fits the Russian Imperial Stout category. Dense, inky black pour. A bit of sweet roasted malt in the nose. Mouthfeel is dense, a bit syrupy, but thins toward the finish. Deep roasted malt, with no burnt character. Some bourbon notes, even though this is not a barrel-aged version. A bit of black pepper at the finish. Surprisingly drinkable.

A- pours jet black with a finger of dark espresso cream head. Ok retention with some spotty lacing.

S- aromas of dark roasted coffee bean, rich fresh brewed espresso and bitter gourmet dark chocolate. A note of black currant and leafy hops comes out in the middle. Finishes with a rediculous amount of roasted malt and oat.

T- huge smooth dark chocolate, rich espresso and oily coffee bean permeate this brew. A touch of sweet herbs and leafy hops coalesces with the superb roasty malts that bring to mind brownies and dry chocolate cake in the middle. Finishes with a lingering chocolate, prune and alcohol warmth.

MF- huge velvity mouthfeel with a chewy thick body and great soft carbonation.

D- This is one massive brew! With that in mind it has incredible drinkability.

Overall a fantastic stormy dark beverage!

Appearance: Pitch black glass doesn't hold more than a thin tan collar that just gives a few spots of lace.

Smell: Heady stuff. Alcoholic rich malt base gives an earthy hop whiff. Slightly split pea aspect, hearty.

Taste: Manages to be full and rich while going down fairly smooth. Malt is the main player, thinned out with alcohol and is only slightly sweet although all but a thin hop leaf is completely hidden.

Mouthfeel: Low carbonation, almost still, slick, chewy, smooth, a lot going on. A bit more carbonation would have been nice.

Overall: Great beer. A malt bomb that goes down easy. Classic RIS style, a bit heavy for everyday drinking but a nice New Year Treat.
Thanks to Illudium for the sample!

Poured into a snifter.

Appearance. Pitch black, with reddish hues near the sides of the glass. Pours with a nice finger and a half of cappuccino brown head. The lacing is in the form of clusters of bubbles that stick around for a bit.

Smell. Sweet and roasty. Some chocolate and nutty notes in there as well.

Taste. Bittersweet chocolate comes to mind right off the bat. This slowly edges toward the bitter end, while at the same time bringing in some rum soaked raisins. The finish is much the same as the start: bittersweet, and lingering.

Mouthfeel. Huge thick body on this one with a moderate amount of carbonation giving a somewhat creamy feel.

This is what I think of when I think of an extreme, yet drinkable imperial stout. All of the flavors and smells hit you hard, but with some finesse.

2011 vintage into my Duvel tulip.

A-Pours a sinister, dense, pitch black body with one finger's worth of creamy and lasting, dark mocha foam that left wide, sticky rings of lacing on the glass.

S-Sweet initially with a bitter roastiness on the tail end.Chocolate cake donut, dark fruit, medium roast coffee and bitter, charred grains.

T-Mild coffee,brownies,burnt toast,Maduro cigar wrapper,dark chocolate and a slight tinny/mineral quality to the finish.

M-Medium/full bodied with moderate richness and an oiliness that was lasting and bitter and coated the tongue nicely.

O-Worthy of it's acclaim.Glad I got the chance to try it.

A completely black beer with a thin mocha head. BORIS is a thick, almost to the point of sludgy beer with a roasted malt taste with a noticeable but background hop presences. The oatmeal comes into play as a slight cookie taste. Overall it's a great beer that worthy of a try.
