I attempt to rate each beer according to its specific style, and it is rare a beer scores a 5.0. The Hoppin' Frog Mean Manalishi Double I.P.A is well deserving of the full rank, though, for this Imperial IPA. The beer poured from the 22 fl oz bottle a gorgeous red color with a hefty two fingers of creamy white head that left lace throughout the entire pint. The smell was just as the labeled promised, a hefty hit of citrus and spicy hops. A very slight caramel note could be sensed in the aroma if you could get past the wafting hop oils. The smell was true to the flavor. A kick of citrus and spice and all things that are hoppy nice bites the tongue instantly and lingers after your sip. As the hops fade, a subtle caramel sweetness mixes nicely and leaves a pleasant aftertaste. The mouthfeel was well rounded and this beer had a nice drinkable texture without feeling watery.
This beer is a treat for anyone who considers themselves a hop-head. If you are on the fence with hops, this will definitely make up your mind one way or the other, but it leaves no room for interpretation. I enjoyed that this Imperial IPA was balanced with the malt body, but clearly focused on the hops. The mix of citrusy and spicy varieties made for a nice rounded beer, and this one is a definite must-try for someone looking to say they have had a real hop-bomb. Enjoy!
