A: Hazy medium brown and a tint of orange. Soft white low-foam head. Tiny bubbles line the glass but no lacing.

S: Not much on the nose, but there is some light caramel scents, and some metal strangely comes through. Not a pleasant scent with the iron.

T: Caramel sweetness, toasted crust, slightly nutty, some alcohol esters. This beer is supposed to have rye in it but I get no rye character at all. No real bitterness on this beer as expected. The esters really overpower the taste, but the smooth grain aftertaste is quite nice. I noticed a cider-like flavor as well.

M: It's medium bodied but filling. Very smooth and slick.

O: Overall it was a good malty beer, but I felt a bit cheated on the rye. I would probably not get it again, because it is overwhelmed by alcohol esters above all else. I would try it again if I could get it from a cask or keg, but it just seems fairly bland.

22 ounce bottle into snifter, no bottle dating. Pours slightly hazy/cloudy reddish copper color with a 1 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a light amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of caramel, toast, toffee, raisin, plum, apple, brown sugar, brown bread, light roast, herbal, and toast/yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/earthy yeast, dark/bready malt, and light earthy hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of caramel, toast, toffee, raisin, plum, apple, brown sugar, brown bread, light roast, light herbal, and toast/yeast earthiness. Minimal earthy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toast, toffee, raisin, plum, apple, brown sugar, brown bread, light roast, light herbal, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice complexity and solid robustness of dark/bready malt, yeast ester, and light earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/yeast balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very smooth, fairly creamy, and lightly slick/bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is a nice scotch ale. Good complexity, balance, and solid robustness of dark/bready malt, yeast ester, and light earthy hop flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. Really needed to be a bit bolder on malt flavors, but still a nicely enjoyable offering.

Besides a little nit of burnt red-orange deeper in the body, this beer is just beyond medium orange in color. The head is small, spritzy and sparse, and retention just above average, though lacing is good.
There's lots of malt and sweetness in the aroma. It's got something like candied orange peel, doughy sugared breads, and caramel along with a whiff of alcohol. It's got a bit of juiciness and even a touch of hop leaf just noticeable.
The flavor takes all those things and brings them out more fully for a nice, complex and well-rounded character. The sweetness comes close to cloying but is balanced out by breadier aspects of the malts, even as some toasty, mildly smoky brown sugar comes in. The hops are used to good effect; a lot wouldn't work well in this beer, but the touch of leaf and the slight bitterness it adds really keep things on level. The hint of warming alcohol actually adds another dimension rather than just heat. The rye is also used well, earthiness another aspect of the balance and spiciness another of the depth.
The carbonation is even, making for a consistent, strong crispness in a medium body. It also manages a good smoothness all the way through.

S - I smell toffee with hints of vanilla. I get some whiffs of alcohol, too.

T - The taste is caramel malt and some alcohol.

M - Full

O - This is a tasty wee heavy. The alcohol becomes apparent as it warms.
