12oz pour->Unibroue Tulip
A ~ Pours rich oily black with spotty lacing, but with an even more faint, chocolate colored head than OG B.O.R.I.S. Carbonation is pretty good for the style.
S ~ Charred oak, ripe bananas, Sugar In The Raw, vanilla bean, bourbon, sweet bread, & lots of roasted malt. Coffee is more faint & subdued. Treesap aromas are more pulpy & blended than the former.
T ~ Outrageous! The charred malts are ever-present, yet softer, & The fruit flavors have morphed in an amazing way. Notes of burnt caramel, raisin toast, brown-sugar oatmeal, & caramelized bananas. Barrel Aging lends notes of peat, vanilla ice cream, mulch, dark chocolate, & reduced Bourbon.
M ~ This beers mouthfeel is near perfect, but this time around, the hops add a lovely amount of subtle dryness to the spicy & sweet finish. Rather than long & dry with heavy bittering, this version is well-rounded, luscious, & peppery on the palette. Bittering is moderate & merely accentuates the barrel aging.
D ~ B.O.R.I.S. Impressed me before, & it impressed me yet again. Improved through Barrel Aging, and still retains some of its original characteristics. This was a great nightcap sipper/after-dinner drink.
Seek out BOTH of these wonderful, wonderful beers.

Gold Cap 2009 release acquired from pochman courtesy of BA Secret Santa 2009 so a big “Thank You” goes out to him. Poured from a 22oz bottle into a snifter pint glass.
A: The beer is a very deep black color, with a very thin beige head that fades quickly and leaves a very thin lace on the glass. However the lack of head and lacing can easily be attributed to the beer’s age being 4+ years.
S: The aroma contains dark chocolate, licorice, coffee, roasted malts, oats and a faint touch of hops.
T: The taste starts out creamy with flavors of coffee and chocolate. Then a hearty roasted malt character quickly follows. There are background flavors of bourbon, licorice and dark fruit. The hops presence is very mild but brings a good balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet.
M: Smooth, a little crisp and quite viscous but a bit chalky, medium-to-heavy body, light-to-medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.
O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, strong kick, very good representation of style, this is a very nice big stout to drink for a long time however I like the original version better.
